How to get going as a bowling writer?
« on: February 24, 2007, 01:09:17 PM »
I feel like we have a few people here who might have some ideas for me.  I like to think I'm a pretty good writer, and I love bowling, so I thought maybe I'd start thinking about trying to write about bowling.  For those of you who don't know, I won the USBC essay contest last year.  You can read it here:  http://www.bowl.com/Downloads/pdf/nationalBowlingWeek/essay_adult-1st.pdf.

Anyhow, where, other than BTM and BJI, are articles on bowling still published?  I don't see anything in my local papers, but I assume there's GOT to be bowling writing out there still. I honestly do NOT care about any money concerns, as that's not why I'd do it.  Anyone have any thoughts/ideas/opinions?  Thanks!

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

I'm in no way a WRITER but if I wanted to embark in such an effort I think the place to start is with a PLAN! Do you want to write about LOCAL high school/college/league bowlers? Do you want to cover the PROS? Would you want to commit to DAILY writings or weekly/monthly/periodic? Have you tried documenting your thoughts for local bowlers to get there feeling on your writings (might give a feeling of acceptance). Drop some of your writings off with a local paper (maybe even flood them) and try to get a foot in the door (being KNOWN can't hurt). Then theres visibility .. make sure you are recognized in the area that you wish to write of. Get in with the local bowlers /bowling instructors/managers/lanes men; if you need .. start getting to know the PROS ..

That would be an approach .. if you are looking to write current events .. if you are looking for other writing fields (how to ../reviews/etc.) another ball game.

Only MY thoughts ..
