Bowling with your opposite hand.
« on: May 03, 2005, 02:37:36 PM »
Last Sunday was the last day of our league. Being that it is a YABA league, the last day is a "Fun Day" where we bowl cosmic, which I dislike greatly, and hold a "Bowler of the Year" tournament. Since it was cosmic bowling, my friend and I decided to try and bowl left-handed (we are both right-handers). We found that using my Savage Flip (drilled right hand) we could both throw hooks as large as my normal down-and-in shot, or approximately as large as the only wrong-hander in the league . . . Now given, the ball speed was slightly lower, but not that much. Has anyone else tried this before? If so, let me know your results please.

Thanks, Klugh

My form left handed is very solid, in fact more solid than right handed.  I spin it a little bit and the speed is slow, but other than that, i'm solid.  Hell, I can even loft gutter caps with my left hand, and i can barely do it right handed.  Maybe I should drill a 14 pounder for my left hand and start practicing....

In the gutter, almost every time.  But I haven't tried very hard to learn to throw lefty.  My equipment also fits very poorly on my left hand.

There is a guy in my scratch league that hurt his right hand.He averages about 225.He switched to left handed bowling,he still averages about 210...Amazing he even beat my teamate 2 out of 3 games. He shot 267,178,258...not bad for the opposite hand.I felt if he could do it so could I.I tried it the next day in practice and I threw 144 lol Guess I'll stick to bowling right handed.

I will be bowling lefty this summer about once a week, it's a challenge between my 12 yr old daughter (who's a south paw) and myself. I told her I could beat her consistantly throwing on her side. She carries a 141 av.   It's on baby!!!

Opposite hand bowling can be a real kick.

Just remember it's illegal to switch within the same sanctioned competition. If you start to use the opposite hand, you are considered another bowling "person" and actually need a separate sanction card. You are technically 2 separate people to the ABC/USBC.

Revolutions has summed up the experience of almost all switchers.

Sparemaking is THE BEATCH!

I must practice about 4 hours a week to keep up with the rest of my game!

I don't!  Unless.... there is a little cash on the line!

This after 5 years.  The story above of great looking action on the lanes and 140 average after 3 to 5 months is not unusual.

Of course the greatest switcher of all time is on this board.  BrunsBob, US open champ Robert Lawrence who in his profile notes he has the highest all time right left series of all time.  Over 1710!  WOW!.

Many a time I've been half way to 800 and then go switcher!!!

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS went and watched a league finals last night.  Guy has switched from left to right due to injury.  Had been really coming on in recent weeks!  When the pressure came on he had four straight single pin opens.... Not unusual for a switcher without extensive weekly spare practice!  Most misses by less than an inch!  I bet some of you guys thinking of switching would find that fun!  I would never switch in a million years!  Except for injury!
