For the Love of the Sport or the Money
« on: February 20, 2007, 06:37:09 AM »
I know a lot of bowlers who bowl for the sole purpose of winning money. I like the idea of winning money and actually winning it, but I enjoy the sport more. I enjoy throwing a strike where the pins just seem to explode and the opposite team even has to tip their hats. Thats what I like. I want to score well and be well known for being a great bowler, I want to succeed, not just financially but in every aspect of this SPORT.

Do you love the sport or just the nice money it pays off?

Fun stuff tends to stop being fun once you start making money with it.  I'd rather enjoy the sport and save the moneymaking for work.

Sport. As far as I'm concerned, they could cut the prices of league bowling and not have any cash prize money and instead go back to trophies and USBC awards. It would make bowling cheaper once more. But that's just me.

I bowl for the fun of it and the break from the office.  The reality is there is no real money in bowling.  If I worked as much as I bowled, I would make a lot more money at work than bowling.

This is true.  Although I wouldn't mind winning money while bowling, I think it would kind of change my attitude about it.  I am going to start entering some tournaments for fun and see how it goes but I think I am going to mainly go for the experience.  Oh and maybe I'll wear some tricked out bowling shirts.

I agree 100%.

I bowl for the fun of bowling.  The money I make is just another way to keep score...win some lose some no matter.

i love the game and the money! the way i look at it, i bowl for the love of the competition of the game. it is what keeps me at this game, but the money i make from it is just a perk! do i win all the time? no, but when i do win money it makes it that much sweeter.

As a proprietor, I don't like money leagues, though I have never had any practical experience with them, money changes everything. Besides driving up the cost of the nightly fees, the competitive environment must also change with it, the fun of bowling could vanish as the stakes involved grows. The most expensive league we have pays 12.00 a nite and teams are only competing for a few hundred dollars at best for winning a league and individual awards are under the 100.00 mark for top award winners. If bowling isn't fun for the participant they won't be bowling for long and big money can take the fun out of it in a hurry.

I feel money leagues are better suited for bowlers on a very high level of performance, pros, semi pros, these leagues would more than likely be all scratch, and would be for those bowlers who thrive on a high level of competition.
My fear of handicap money leagues, are the unscrupulous bowler or bowlers who could load a team with true "sandbaggers", these cheaters can ruin a league in a hurry.

Another reason I don't care for money leagues is that the cost necessary to have a money league could actually force bowlers who bowl in multiple leagues to give up a league or 2 in order to bowl in a money league because of the higher cost.

Anyway this is just my take on money leagues, as I said I really have not had any experience with them, so feel free to tell me whether I am right or wrong in my opinions of them.
