Knee Pain
« on: August 30, 2008, 02:36:17 PM »
I know these types of posts get posted occasionally---unfortunately they never concerned me so I never looked. Last Wednesday, I threw a shot during the first game of my league match that I wish I could have back. I got a sharp, shooting pain, directly below my kneecap on the front of the knee.

Ive experienced my legs getting very stiff after sitting for awhile now. But this sharp pain was new and different. I turned around and shot the spare and it felt not 100% but wasnt nearly the doubling over pain I had on the first shot. The rest of the night, I was wary of it, but I didnt change anything---and it felt ok.

My question---
What types of maladies could this be? Sharp pain directly below the kneecap---especially when using the knee to bend more vigorously. I felt this pain pretty frequently 3 years ago (unfortunately it meant I was throwing the ball well). It was gone for the last couple years when I cut back a bit. Now Im back and bowling more---and Im wondering what this may be? Patellar tendonitis, or something else? Any medical or non-medical opinions would be appreciated.

I don't know what it is called but it is an inflammation of the ligaments below the kneecap.Ice it after bowling when it hurts.Take ibupropen and I use a knee strap that u can buy at Walmart call Jumpers knee strap.about $7.00 It goes rt under the kneecap.  I have been doing this for years.  Hope it helps you.

im in the "knee pain" club. im only 24 and have had to walk out after the first game the past couple of weeks of league. my knee just gives out. i have a 4 step approach with a deep knee bend. its really frustrating to be coming of a good season and then everything crumble down. i had to quit summer league because of my knee. i looks like im going to have to quit my leagues im in now too. i am one with really good smooth form. my joints over extend so im felxible. well the bad thing is being "double jointed" all over your body for your whole life puts twice the amount of wear and tear on u. its worst then its ever been now. i went from a 186 ave. to around a 110 the past couple of weeks cuz i cant hold myself up at the line. i am stumbling, falling, of yelling in pain. i do wear a knee brace and everything. i work out trying to build the muscles up, i get in the hot tube to relax them. everything i can think of and its still the same. im makes me sick at my stomach!

notsohot and Hammerdoom, I appreciate your constructive responses. My feet tend to go forward at the foul line. They didnt many years ago, but they do now. I shortened my approach about 6 years ago and that has allowed me to stay more square.

Nextbowler, I appreciate your bluntness and the lack of information your post included. Thanks for nothing. Yes, I know I may not be talking to doctors---notice I didnt ask for advice on how to treat it. I asked if anyone had experienced it. Next time, just move on without posting.

NOTHUMB,

Seriously, I would go seek the advice of your doctor.  I have had knee problems for years also, and it wasn't until I finally got it looked at by my physician that I started an effective physical therapy schedule and now it is stronger than it has been in years.  My problem was a weak joint, and a low amount of cartilage around the knee.  I was put on cartilage enhancing supplements, and did specific exercises to strengthen the joint.  These worked wonderfully, but for years I had just used braces and ibuprofen, which only prolonged the pain and did untold damage from the pills.  Good luck with getting to the bottom of your problem, and may I just say the sooner you get it checked out the better.  Take care.

I had some terrible knee troubles for quite a while, wore a knee brace to no avail. No matter what I did my knee started hurting halfway through the first game and continued through the night.

Turns out someone watching my approach told me a swayed to the left a bit and compensated for it by coming in at an angle and my foot was angled to the line this caused my knee to attempt to bend in a direction it wasn't meant to bend it from the force of my approach. I straightened out my footwork, came into my slide clean and my knee ailments were gone.

Don't know if this will help at all because each situation is unique in it's own, but if you do a lot of strenuous things on your feet and legs I would cut back on it, any running on hard surfaces can cause cartilage in your knees to deteriorate faster than normal. If you do run, try switching to an eliptical machine to eliminate a lot of impact. There's a lot of knee excercises that you can do to help strengthen the muscles in the area but to be 100% I would see a doctor than can perform some tests to find out the exact problem behind it. It could be bone damage, ligament, joints and the list goes on and on.

Check with a doctor or physical therapist to see what the problem is and what your remedies are.

NOTHUMB,

Granted nextbowler wasn't very polite about it, but the problem with trying remedies that were used successfully by others is that it might not help your problem because while the general symptom(s) might be similar, the cause COULD BE completely different! Worse still is while you trying to continue to bowl, the cause could be getting worse AND you could be doig irreversible damage.

Even MainePBA said the first thing to do is see a doctor.

Find the cause first then try a solution. Don't be like a bad auto mechanic, who tries 49 solutions without ever knowing the cause of the problem. This issn't someone else's car. It's the only body you've got.

Yes, I have knee problems too. Exercise helps: better muscles help support the knee. Advil helps sometimes. Glucosamine/chondroitin (helps build up cartilage around/inside the knee) helps the other knee sometimes.

Wow ok, you said it more politely charlest---but the same thing. I never said I would do what anyone has done. I was just asking for feedback. I wasnt going to the doctor on Saturday or Sunday so why not ask and get some feedback as to what it might be.

Everyone else on the board may expect you to read their mind. I dont. When I ask a question, its in black and white and thats what Im looking for. I know I need to see a doctor---just looking for an idea of what Im getting myself into.

Thank you for everyones response---including those who say to go to the doctor. Trust me, thats in my plans.

May not matter now though. Im pretty sure I just broke my foot today. Good stuff.

Sounds like Osgood-Schlatter disease.
But I'm sure you're not a teen, with your bowling accomplishments.
I had it from the age of 9 til I was about 17-18.
Hurt when I knelt down, jumped or bowled.

I'd see a doc...I'm sure you will.
