Bowlmor/amf shuts down another center.
« on: June 29, 2014, 12:09:38 PM »
Summit lanes, Jackson, MI. Closes doors today. Hows that open to close glo bowl plan working out for you now Bowlmor? I left there when Bowlmor took over. I could not stand the idea of glo bowl all day. Bowlmor really has no clue what bowling should be about. They deserve everything they are going to get. Bowlmor is just another black eye to the sport of bowling. And yes, to me league bowling is still sport. I feel terrible for all of the employees. They worked hard and were a great bunch.

Unfortunate, the AMF near me has had a mass exodus in staff as they see the writing on the wall as well.

The AMF I bowl at has only made improvements to the bowl. Must suck for you bowlers that leave cause you don't like change then come on here to say a center has shut it's doors.

Do you really believe that your typical league bowler would enjoy glow bowl?

I will tell you that if I go into a center and they have that glow bowl going on, I turn around and leave.

So Bowlmor/AMF are doing it to themselves.

My AMF/Bowlmor center only oils in the summer when there is a league bowling that evening. We have a small mixed handicap at 7 PM Thursdays, on one side of the house; on the other side, at 9 PM, is a singles league. This past Thursday I learned that the house refused to oil for the singles league because the house s not making enough money on that singles league. They said that if they oil, they would be losing money. The house sponsored the league and the past few years that league covered 24 - 30 lanes. This year, I think it is a lot smaller.

I watched that league for a few moments as I was leaving: even higher speed bowlers' balls were hooking in the heads.

And so it goes.

Lol What?! I've never seen glow bowling during the day at our AMF center. It only seems to be after 9pm and on the weekends.

Ok sorry. :-[  I must have misunderstood where you were coming from.

No problem but in my area I haven't seen what I've been seeing posted.

If the centers make more money cosmic bowling, then they should go for it. During the weekends in the nearest centers to me, they are flooded with teenagers that live to cosmic bowl. Brunswick has changed their start time to 5 on Friday and Saturday. I don't blame them.

I am hopeful that the remaining centers in my area will stay profitable under the bowlmor model of more parties and glo bowl.  More importantly stay open.

They seem to be filling up and staying busy as leagues continue to shrink in today's not as 9 to 5 oriented work environment.

I believe their methods are turning the remaining centers to profitability!

Profitability means staying open!  Yay!

I have to drive 45 miles to bowl at a decent house. The house in town is 1960s old wood with old pinsetters- AMF 82-70s. There is much to be said about being profitable and staying open.

old wood surfaces does not necessarily mean bad though...and kept up properly, I don't see anything necessarily wrong with the 82-70's (although I seem to recall the 82-30's were the easier of the two for basic desk help to fix issues with but it has been close to 30 years since I worked PT in a center that actually had both types of equipment).

That being said, I do remember the days of having to drive to get TO a center...no local option even existed in some of the places I have lived.  I know there is one close to the lake house, but I haven't bowled league in probably eight years now.

Michelle,
I am not big on griping about conditions, so I am ok with the poorly maintained wood house, except for the lack of adequate air conditioning. Some get aggravated because the nasty pit will mess up your shirt. That said, I would trade the hot  nasty poorly kept house for a decently kept house with all day cosmic any day.

I think we as bowlers forget that these alleys are set up to make money first.
