Bowlmor/amf shuts down another center.
« on: June 29, 2014, 12:09:38 PM »
Summit lanes, Jackson, MI. Closes doors today. Hows that open to close glo bowl plan working out for you now Bowlmor? I left there when Bowlmor took over. I could not stand the idea of glo bowl all day. Bowlmor really has no clue what bowling should be about. They deserve everything they are going to get. Bowlmor is just another black eye to the sport of bowling. And yes, to me league bowling is still sport. I feel terrible for all of the employees. They worked hard and were a great bunch.
Todd.

Amazing, with all the bowling\business "geniuses" we have on this site, why is no one buying these failing houses and making themselves millionaires. Perhaps they already have too much money. That has to be it.

I wouldn't mind it if I had the money.

I'm the same way. I would love to own a bowling alley, but we would need to be wealthy enough to not have to depend on it for income in a lot of cases.

I overheard a guy Friday night talking about the house where he is the Head Mechanic.

He was telling another guy that he could be losing his job soon because the lease on the house was up for renewal soon. The property owners wanted a few million for a 10 year lease, but the house only cleared a little over $100K last year. And place needs a lot of upgrades. He mentioned a few times that he was not being pessimistic, just realistic about the future.

I know my house makes decent money but I feel like it could make more if they were willing to run special deals to start bringing people back as regulars. The owner isn't worried about anything like that because we're 1 of 2 alleys in the city and the other one is just really old and beat up with 10 lanes whereas we have 20 and everything was upgraded a few years ago.

Michelle,
I am not big on griping about conditions, so I am ok with the poorly maintained wood house, except for the lack of adequate air conditioning. Some get aggravated because the nasty pit will mess up your shirt. That said, I would trade the hot  nasty poorly kept house for a decently kept house with all day cosmic any day.

I think we as bowlers forget that these alleys are set up to make money first.

Well, I understand where your coming from with lane conditions and air conditioning. But if it were me, I would quit bowling before I bowl cosmic ever again. Period.
Todd.

Although I don't bowl in this house, the AMF house in Edmond, OK appears to be doing really well .... so far. I think Anne Marie Duggans pro shop being in this house helps it a lot as she has way more business from both local and far away, than any other pro shop in this area.

I bowl in what once was a Brunswick house but now owned by a person with bowling houses in more than one State. Lanes are synthetic and pin setters and scorers are old, but well maintained as well as the lanes well maintained. The manager in this house does a really great job of running it and the bowling prices are more reasonable when compared to the AMF house 5 miles from this one. This house only has a part time pro shop whereas the Anne Marie Duggan pro shop in the AMF house is full time.

I think there is a definite difference between buying a center and building a center.  At least in my area, many of the AMF/Bowlmor centers were intentionally closed down to prevent competition.  If a person wants to enter the market, then they would have to start from scratch and that is a little riskier.

I see nothing wrong with Bowlmor having more of an appeal to those types of bowlers.  The problem is they need to broaden out and show they are trying get all bowlers possible.  If I have a bowling center with private party rooms, laser tag, and a kegel machine, I would advertise that.
