Bring a control ball everywhere you go....
« on: July 21, 2005, 02:41:14 PM »
This week I got caught not bringing a control ball to either my Monday summer adult junior league in one house and my Thursday sport shot league in the other house. At this point I've bowled in each league for 2 months, figured I had both shots under control and had the same arsenal set up for each league. The weakest ball I needed in both houses was an out of box surface Havoc, and I always had my spare ball if worse came to worse. In the Thursday sport challenge league (which happens to be about 35 miles northeast of where I live) after bowling on each pattern at least once (and 3 of the 4 patterns twice) I saw that the weakest ball I needed again was the Havoc.

On Monday night the hot/humid whether that's been hitting the country really made these wood lanes very extreme in the over/under category, to the point that my Havoc was going through the face if I dared touch outside of 6 board, but if I got it inside of 9 or 10....skate city. I managed to take a polished Rule, take some hand out of the ball and play 12-6 in the third game to eek out a 566 series. I thought I would have better luck on Thursday.

When I walked into the center I found out from my teammate that due to complaints from many of the bowlers over the course of the summer, the lane mechanic and owner of the center decide to put out a 5th sport pattern, a 30' light oil volume shot. When we had our initial meeting at the beginning of the league, there was a discussion of what would be used for patterns and we were told by the league secretary there would be 4 patterns as well as never seeing the same pattern two weeks in a row. So here I am bringing what's worked for 2 months in this league only to be caught again with my drawers down....

So my credo is now: Bring a control ball wherever you go. You may only need it once in a great while, but here are two instances in less than a week where my ability to score was severely hampered by my choice of equipment to bring...

I also haul 3 balls to any lane, plus a spare. Normally two balls as 1st choice and a backup, when the line becomes dry, plus an additional option as a fallback/plan C option when the lane is completely different than expected.

Favorites in my arsenal for heavier conditions when anything else fails is my 1.000 grit X-Factor Re-Loaded, and for easier conditions a 1.500 grit Vicious Attack. Both are drilled with pin above ring finger, CG dircetly below and MB to the right of the thumb hole for length on medium conditions. With this, both balls are very steady balls.

In the humid air of summer, lanes can really be tricky. In my Monday summer league during the last weeks, the lanes have been completely different from winter and spring time. I used to play heavy stuff like an Eliminator, but this is by far too much. I have got down to polished particle pearl and polished pearl raectives to create length. But through the course of the league, even these lighter balls burn up! Hell...

I just bought a used high RG polished pearl and had it drilled pin above bridge with CG in the palm as a length and control ball. First tests looked promising, but I struggle with humidity, too. I also bought a Urethane ball as a new final fallback option for (too) grippy backend and toasted heads.

Got to agree with ya Matt!!

You should see what Auburn has been like the past few weeks since they resurfaced the lanes...

...instant hook and the carry down after a game or so gets nasty fast.
