Brooklyn? Jersey? Idiocy?
« on: July 25, 2007, 01:57:51 AM »
A debate between a close friend and me sparked this topic: When you cross over to the "incorrect" side of the headpin, what do you call it? I call it Brooklyn. He calls it Jersey. (We live in different states.) Does it change for everyone based on where they live?

I think it's been offically changed to "Going Barnes".

Around these parts it's referred to as the WRONG side.

I was told that when a right-handed bowler crosses over it's called a "Brooklyn"; and when a left-handed bowler crosses it's called a "Jersey".

I've only ever heard it called a Brooklyn strike around here.  I've heard that "Jersey" is another term for it, but I've never met anyone who says that.

I am from Staten Island, which is connected to Brooklyn via the Verrazano Bridge, and we call it Jersey.  Jersey is to the left of us, Brooklyn to the right.  The only bowlers that can call it Brooklyn, and be geographically correct, would be Long Islanders, I guess.

It was always a Brooklyn to me, and I grew up in Ohio.

Growing up in Brooklyn, we always called a cross-over Jersey.  I thought that "everywhere" else, a cross-over was called Brooklyn.  Didn't Nelson Burton used to call them Brooklyn shots on the old PBA telecasts?

Being from Jersey, I always heard a Righty Cross-Over a "Brooklyn" and a Lefty Cross-Over a "Jersey".  I guess this is one of those things that will never be finalized.  To each is own.  All in all it's a bad shot.

Why does everyone try to make it harder than it really is?  Overthinking makes the game that much more difficult.

Same here.. I'm not from Boston, a bit south actually.

Oh, and if "Going Barnes" is going to make me $200K, then sign me up!!
