Brooklyn? Jersey? Idiocy?
« on: July 25, 2007, 01:57:51 AM »
A debate between a close friend and me sparked this topic: When you cross over to the "incorrect" side of the headpin, what do you call it? I call it Brooklyn. He calls it Jersey. (We live in different states.) Does it change for everyone based on where they live?

Of course I also hear both all the time, Brooklyn and Jersey.  But if you look at a map, Brooklyn is east of New Jersey.  So it never makes sense to me when I hear it.

I have always called it Brooklyn too, although I have heard it called Jersey. Of course on some shots, I call it lined up LOL.

brookyln strike
jersey strike

we call it brooklyn... seems us germans adapted this term...

I call it as my friend is called ("Adler"(ger) = "Eagle" in English9 as he almost always makes at least 2 strikes per game goin' brooklyn

So I call it an "Adler strike"/"Eagle strike"

I was taught as a kid that if a righty did it it was Brooklyn, if a lefty did it, it was Jersey. I'm from Delaware

From a right handed perspective I think we also call it moving 4 and 2 left.

Why does everyone try to make it harder than it really is?  Overthinking makes the game that much more difficult.

Always Brooklyn...until we met and started bowling with friends from Brooklyn, they called it a Jersey no matter whether it was righty or lefty crossover. In 35 years of bowling I had never heard Jersey until we met this couple. In Connecticut (and now Florida) it was always Brooklyn.

I bowl with a guy born and raised in Brooklyn, he says...only Brooklyn folks call it Jersey, always heard of it as Brooklyn. Who knows ?

On bad nights, a "X" is a "X" is a "X", on those nights, I'll take them anyway I can get them !

I've only ever heard it called a Brooklyn strike around here.  I've heard that "Jersey" is another term for it, but I've never met anyone who says that.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. We always called the cross-over for lefty or righty a "jersey". When I moved to New Jersey, it took me a good 10 years before I started calling a cross-over strike a "brooklyn".

As far as I know, in most of New York State, a cross-over has ALWAYS been called a "jersey". So I assume it started in compettition between NY and NJ bowlers man, many years ago.

Speaking of bad nights...my last day at JOG I was bowling Transit and managed to open my last game with a spare, 3 strikes, spare, 4 strikes. Why is this bad? The first 6 strikes were brooklyn...
