Haven't had a coach since Juniors, 30-odd years ago.

Given that I'm a once-a-week bowler, and that my competitive days are long behind me, I don't think it would make much sense for me to have a coach.

I had a coach.. Jumped my average from 160 up to 190-200.

Been fortunate enough to have been "coached" by several over the years. Fran Bax, Bruce Heim, Jack Jurek, Brad Angelo and many more in the area have given me assistance in my game.

My son (17) raised his game from a 185 to 210 level with the coaching of Brad Angelo, Fran Bax, Dave Guindon and Steve Lenegan.

I have a coach with the following certifications:
-> USA Bowling Silver Level Coach
-> Dick Ritger's Level 3 Bowling Instructor
-> USA Junior Olympic Bowling Coach Level II
-> Completed Level 2 of Canadian National Coaching Certification Program

He's helped me bring up my average from a measly 150 to a 185 (35 pin increase!). I'd have to say that getting a coach has been one of the greatest things I've ever done. I'd recommend a coach to anyone who would like to learn more about the game as well as improve on their bowling...greatly.

These things are all well and good, but they mostly teach you how to coach and not how to bowl. There is a distinct difference. These classes teach you basics and can help people in the 150 to 170 range, after that you need to find someone who can teach you to bowl that knows how to bowl (may not be that great of a bowler themselves), but can teach the game and can see what you need to do to improve.

I have had the privilege of working with several great coaches over the course of the past 25 years. The first was a guy by the name of Lew Berman. Lew worked with me in the pits of the center I used to bowl in. He was from New Jersey and bowled in the same youth league as Parker Bohn, and was taught by several of the great players of the game like Dave Davis and Teta Semiz. That isn't what made him a good coach, what made him a good coach was the ability to teach the basic fundamentals of the game and make sure I could repeat them, which wasn't an easy thing to do before video cameras, especially with me being so uncoordinated.

The past couple of years I have been working with Dr. Jeff Briggs and Ron Clifton, they come to my area and do clinics 3 or 4 times a year. They are both great teachers of the game and have fantastic eyes for coaching. The only reason they use video is to show us what we are doing. The funny thing about this game is, what it feels to you like you are doing, usually isn't what you are actually doing. Getting the feel of what you are actually doing is the first step in changing what you are actually doing.

I have personally video taped people who couldn't believe what I was telling them and they still wanted to argue even after seeing the tape. This one student of mine swore he had his hand behind the ball, and I showed him on the tape, his hand was on the side of the ball. He said it was the angle that I was holding the camera. I had to go behind him and catch the ball in his back swing and have him turn and look at the position of his hand before he believed me. Once he saw his hand position was not where he thought it was, he was able to change to any position he wanted, just by getting the feel for what he was actually doing. This is why having a coach helps, but these are things they don't teach you in class and can only be learned by people who have been there themselves.
