Bowling in the Pro-Am this weekend (Trussville)...
« on: January 23, 2006, 04:53:29 PM »
I just found out today that I'm going to be able to bowl in the pro-am in Trussville (Birmingham) this Saturday. I never even knew these things existed until someone showed me the website. Now, I'm signed up...still can't believe it.

I have a good average (198), but I know I don't really belong on the lanes with those guys. Has anyone here done this before and (hopefully) had a good experience? I'm afraid I'm going to be rather starstruck the whole time I'm there. Supposedly, we have Shafer, Duke, Voss, Machuga, R.Smith, perhaps W.R. Williams and a couple of the younger guys on our shift. Not since the first time I bowled a state tournament have I found myself worried about how to act at a tournament.

If I don't forget to turn the ball loose and end up stuffing it up my own nostril, I'll consider the day a success.

I have bowled 3 and have had a great time at each one.  The pros are a lot of fun to bowl with.  They are not going to judge you, but if you want to ask questions, they are ther to help.

I bowled the ProAm for the Dick Weber Open. The pros moved every 5 frames.  I got to meet and bowl with Patrick Allen, Bryon Smith, Mike DeVaney, Randy Pedersen, Steve Jaros, and Tim Criss.  They were all great and friendly.

My advice is to just relax and have fun.  I look forward to next year and hope they are back at Fountain Bowl.

Did you bowl on a house shot for the tournament, or did you get the PBA shot of the week?

My husband and I bowled the pro-am this past week in Phoenix.  It was our first, and we had a great time ... no nerves at all.  I'm sure it helped that I knew going in that I probably wasn't going to be in the money, so the good time was my prize.  Sadly, I seemed to be playing 8-pin in a 9-pin world.  Made most of my spares, but couldn't keep up with all those 9-count strikes.

We bowled with Mike Scroggins, Chris Loschetter, Jack Jurek, Walter Ray, Brian Himmler and Tom Baker.  They were all very nice and seemed pleased to be bowling with us.  My only complaint about the whole thing was that we had a "good" (read "I think I'm great") bowler on our pair who did his best to dominate each of the pros' attention during their five frames on our lanes.  Only Himmler and Baker allowed that to happen.

Oh, a slight disappointment ... we were hoping to bowl on the shot put out for the tournament, but they put out a THS for the pro-am.  We asked if this was normal, and Scroggins told us it depends on the house running the show.

Now my only dilemma is how to get my PBA Inferno drilled.  I don't think I've ever before had a ball with a 1.3 oz. top weight.  Should be interesting.  At least I got a nice pin!

Have a blast and enjoy the time you get with the pros.  Even though it's advertised, they don't do a lot of "coaching" during their time on your lanes, but if you ask, they'll watch you and offer suggestions.  Jurek gave me some great advice on how to improve my roll with a slight hand adjustment.

We had a house shot for the tourney.  Of the 3 I've bowled, all were house shots and all were in different centers, Castaways in Vegas, National Bowing Stadium in Reno (that was the toughest shot, but definitely not a PBA shot), and Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley.

Thanks. If they lay down a THC in Vestavia Bowl, there are going to be no-tap 300s out the rear end. That place can be a scoring bonanza, especially given how the pins fly.

The lady running the tournament told me they were going to have a "competition" between the three centers hosting pro-ams (Vestavia Bowl, Oak Mountain Lanes, and the show house, Lightning Strikes), but I don't know what prize (if any) the "winning" house gets.
