Had my first sport tournament today.
« on: May 24, 2014, 10:28:57 PM »
Bowled in the bowlflorida tournament today at Aloma, 38ft shot 30mL of oil.
Bowled tournaments before, but nothing on a sport shot. Have practiced on a few sport shots though.

Bowled 3rd squad, with no reoil in between squads so the lanes had some use.
Used my 930T all three games and did ok.
Could have been so much better, open frames killed me.

Ended up 30 pins short of making the cut to the finals. Would have been great to make it, but oh well. Ill try harder next time.
Though I did get to bowl next to Jason Couch all day and it was really fun watching him play.
Amazed me seeing all the pros and high average guys shoot the low scores that they did. I really need to get away from house tournaments and bowl more sport stuff.

Also, really interesting bowling in front of cameras. They had 3 pairs set up on a live stream and i got to bowl on one of them in my 3rd game. Really cool. Had one of my friends watching the stream and gave me some advice after, it was nice to have that.

Overall i had a good time, im definitely gonna try and get to do more tournaments like this.

Just thought id share.

How did the blue pill taste, Neo? Lol, once you bowl on sport shots, you almost feel like you're cheating yourself on a house shot.

If you want to learn, the sport patterns are the way to go
I was lucky to hang out with Jason at a demo days here a few years ago
Just an all around great guy, good ambassador for our sport
and funny as heck, awesome old tour stories

Ive practiced a few times on them and had mixed results, but the just the atmosphere in general of this tournament sat really well with me, i definitely enjoyed myself.

And yeah, i actually went back to my home house afterward and bowled a few games with the friends that went with me.
Amazed me how much easier it was to bowl on the THS im used to. World of difference, but in a good way.

I watched for a while on the live stream (Craig Elliott and Michiganbowler.tv does a great job and he broadcasts a lot of our stuff up here in Michigan)  Pattern looked Pure Evil (as the name suggests)  you can find a link to it at http://bowlingknowledge.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=section&id=27&Itemid=66 ..  A very very tough pattern for your first go at it, but at least you pushed yourself to do it!  Hope you keep it going and continue to strive to get better and make those cuts! :)

Yeah, i was told going in about the pattern and how hard it was. All of my friends i knew went struggled, i was the only one close to the cut, and theyre all a lot better than i am. I figured it out towards the end, just wasnt soon enough.

Ive got a tournament this weekend, i guess its a modified sport shot. Dont know the exact pattern, ill have to find out. Looking forward to it though.

The best thing possible is to use the sport patterns to learn a release that is most compatible with flatter patterns.  With most people their problem on sport patterns is not one of repeating shots, but of way to much axis rotation which necessitates covering too many boards.  The modern softer release allows us to create plenty of revs without resorting to the open shouldered, cup wristed release that became popular in the 80's when going out to the gutter and back seemed to create the most carry.

Some of the old fundamentals such as less opening of the shoulders, and less left drift in the approach allow you to square up more, which is absolutely fundamental to playing most sport patterns.  It takes some work, but if you can repeat shots on house patterns, you can modify your game ( if necessary ) to repeat shots on sport patterns.

I bowled that same tournament at the Aloma Bowl. I was there on sunady the 25th. It Took me 2 tries to qualify for the semi-finals. First set I was trying to play up the out of bounds on the left side, and I just couldn't get a consistent reaction playing the oiler parts of the lane. Took A break for lunch and then came back to try another squad...This time I took my Clear wolf heavily polished and stroked it straight out over the 2nd arrow. Didn't get a whole lot of strikes but didn't get into trouble on mis-shots had a bit of em.

Came down ill the night before the semi-finals, but still found a way the following morning to get by the 3 game semis which cut from 152 semi-finalists down to 80. We bowled one more game to cut the field down 40 And missed that cut by 12 pins---at that time I was soo weak I could hardly stand up anymore, so if I had made it further I don't know if I could have physically done it.

I was there at saturday and missed the cut, planned to go back on sunday with a friend to try again and we ended up not going.

First 2 games i was playing 8-9 boards fairly straight, by the 3rd I was moving left inside of 2nd arrow and had a much better reaction when I started trying to swing the ball farther out.

In the beginning I was throwing 1 MPH slower or so than I normally do and I wasnt putting as much hand in as i normally do, It was working I just couldnt get more than a double at a time. Once I started moving left and putting more hand in my carry went up and I had a much easier time stringing strikes. Shame it took me 3 games to figure it out though, otherwise I would have a chance to make it in.
