How far in do you put your fingers?
« on: March 08, 2007, 03:47:26 AM »
I do something that I wonder if  anyone else does.  Depending on whether I want to really hit the shot or back off I'll put my fingers in the ball to varying depths.  I use a short span and generally wedge my thumb pretty deep.  The fingers are drilled deeper than I need by about 1/8".  I will tend to back my fingers out in later games in longer blocks (ie, last weekend by the sixth game I was in the ball probably 1/4" less than the first game.  It's not a big difference, but I can feel it and it certainly seems to make a difference in how hard  I hit it.

Anyone else do this?

Are you doing this by conscious choice?  It makes sense to me if you want to take a little off the ball.  I find myself digging in deeper the longer I bowl because my fingers shrink and it's a pain to keep adding shims.  My wife's fingers swell so she can't get in as far as the games progress.  We can never seem to get to the pro shop when it's open at the same time her fingers are at their largest to have them changed out.

kev3inp;
My fiancee has the same problem as your wife and the best solution she found is to use what she calls floating inserts, this is simply done when the ball is drilled, all the driller does is to drill the finger holes as normal then before fitting the inserts use the bevel sander to make the holes slightly bigger then fit the inserts but only glue the front of the inserts, the inserts will fit her fingers properly and also expand with her fingers as needed.Debbie has been using this method for 3 years now with no problems and her fingers still fit right even when she bowls 9 game blocks and her fingers swell to maximum. Hope this helps.

I always put my fingers in a little farther than you're "supposed" to.  I actually have tears and callouses just below the joint from deeper penetration.

you see what I did there?

From the title, I was expecting this to be about something else!

A lot of my balls apparently were not drilled properly.  For most of my inserts I couldn't even get my fingers down to the first joint.  The next size up was too big, so I just learned to bowl with a half finger tip grip.

When I went to a new pro shop, they re-fitted me and also mentioned the half sizes available.  Turns out that the old pro shop wasn't drilling the hole big enough for the inserts - maybe the drill bit was sharpened too many times?  Either way, on the balls that have been drilled by the new shop, I can actually get in to the first knuckle - feels different, but I don't really notice a difference other than my fingertips/nails don't hurt when bowling more than 4 games anymore.

Whatever happened to "That's a rather personal question"? it's not as tacky and obvious of a retort. Some guys have not class.

Actually, my strike ball is to the first knuckle and I've found that since I want to ovals and shortened the span on my spare ball that I go maybe 1/8" farther. I like the control, especially on my sevens.

The Ratpack,  I just wanted to acknowledge your post, and I think it's a great idea.  We're certainly going to give it a try.

if I can get my whole fist in, we're good to go!

In seriousness, I don't use grips and open the fingers up to the point that I can get both fingers in to the 2nd joint with only mild pressure. This guarantees a decently snug fit and also allows for swelling.

Also, I back my ring finger out of the hole somewhat when I am trying to project the ball a bit further down the lane... keeps me from hitting it hard.

On a serious note I wonder if the topic starter is refering to grips. With grips, it is more difficult to get the precise depth of the fingers. You also have more options though of only putting your fingers 1/2 inch to past the first knuckle. Of course this would also depend on a shorter or longer span of your ball.
With fingertip drilled, you do not have this problem. Assuming the pro shop or driller can drill the holes somewhat precise and the bevel level is very mild, you cannot jam your fingers in the ball. Another case of me personally thinks that fingertip drilled is vastly superior to grips.
