Lets take a step backwards!
« on: March 04, 2011, 02:39:20 AM »
Crazy thought.  One of the most expensive things for proprietors is to replace their scoring.  Across the nation scoring is becoming dated and crt monitors eat a lot of electricity,   Figuring that to replace 24 lanes of scoring with new is in the area of $135,000 and the electric cost on top of that who would be opposed to keeping score by hand the old fashioned way.   If a new center opened with manual scoring but a reduced rate for league and open play would you bowl there?

I personally love the idea but don't think it is feasible. The bulk of most centers customer base is made up of recreational bowlers, open play, and parties/events. Plus, as mentioned, many people wouldn't want to, or wouldn't be accurate enough.

As far as the expenses that go along with maintaining and updating a center I am a firm believer that you get what you put into it.

There are tons of centers around my area and a handful have closed recently. These are the centers that never cared. Some proprietors want the money to keep flowing in without keeping pace with the changes that have come along.

The two most successful near me are Woodland Lanes and Plaza Lanes. Combined they have invested hundreds of thousands over the last 10 years and they are full almost every night.

I like the Idea. The only problem is,only us old guy's will keep score. I do not believe the young kids could do it unless there is a app for it on the I-phone. Have you ever seen them give change at the store. They can not count unless the cash register tells them how much.  I know this is harsh but true.

i unfortunately remember when we did have to keep score.  usually you flipped a coin to see who would get stuck keeping score for 2 out of 3 games, unless you ran into someone who liked to do it.  i didn't mind keeping it, because it does really keep you in the entire game and not just your own. but i don't think its feasible with leagues, just because of the human error factor what if you lost by 1 pin, then you have to recheck the entire score sheet. now open bowling for those who could get a discounted rate would be a good idea.
