Ball speeds
« on: November 21, 2008, 04:54:23 AM »
Got into a discussion at work about various balls speeds and seem to come to the following conclusion:

18 and above mph - high
16-17 mph - medium
15 and below mph - low

Was curious as to what others thought's on this subject were.

I used to have faster ball speeds back in the day.  Spare balls are close to 30 mph.  Strike balls are usually around 22-23.  All speeds measured in tournament play.  Now I try to stay under the 20's except on spare balls.  I usually cause dead wood on 10 pin spares hehe.

Yes, he does. Did you know, that I climbed Mt. Everest?

But...Necro certainly did it in a better time, wearing a speedo and carrying a severely disabled child whose only wish was to reach the peak before he expired.

Too many possible (deserving) replies to this...

I am most comfortable around 15mph, but will ramp up to 18mph if the conditions call for it, although those speeds are harder for me to maintain across three games consistently since they are so far out of my comfort zone.

CATS has a database of information tying ball speed to average range. While it is not necessarily cause/effect, there is correlation. If I remember correctly, bowlers with averages over 210 typically have ball speed in excess of 17.5 mph and 220+ average bowlers in excess of 18.1mph. Exempt PBA bowlers typically in excess of 18.5mph.

Ya know I usta think my ball speed was like around 18mph when i was bowling seriously, but i never knew what it was.   Well this yr, the place i am at has Qubica scoring systems and my ball speed is consistently mid 16mph.

Everynow n then, i get a bit fast and can tell, and generally do the ya that one was probably 17mph and i look up at the screen and bam, 99% of the time i do hit 17mph.

As for higher ball Speed = higher average, i dont think that's completely true.

Now, when i have a split, i generally rev up the MPH and toss the ball as hard as i can, and can hit 22mph normally and hit 23/24mph once.

There's no way you "wheel the lane" as you say with your ball speed that high.  You are such a FIGJAMming douchebag.

I don't wheel the lane.  I either put super revs and have it snap at the end or I play outside.  I don't throw it that fast anymore because of my right side.

There is definately a relationship between ball speed and average. If you don't believe it, slow your ball speed down 2 to 3 mph and what your average drop. Some of the marginal shots will not carry, and you want see those lucky brooklyns as often.

I think as long as speed and revs match up it doesnt matter how fast you throw the ball.I have saw some bowlers avg. 210+ throwing the ball 13-14 mph and some bowlers throwing avg. 165-180 throwing 18-20 mph.

Yes, you probably get more pin action due to higher ball speed, especially on off-pocket hits, BUT, if your speed and rev rate match up like previously mentioned, then your average should be fine if your technique is good.  As an example, my best ball reaction speed is about 13.5 at the pins, and I get all sorts of pin action and it is a much easier shot for me physically.  Sure, I can throw it harder, but that's not what is best for me.
