Questions about pro shop drillings
« on: October 09, 2012, 11:45:02 PM »
have a few questions on here for everyone and was wondering about facts on how deep you can drill weight holes, fingers, and thumbs. Long story short a friend of mine went to a pro shop and got a cyclone, he has had this ball about a month and says it hits like a turd and never carries. well i look at it and notice that the pro shop guy drilled the weight hole so deep its literally in the weight block of the ball, not all of the hole is drilled to the weight block but only a quarter of the right side is since he is a lefty. Not sure if this legal to use nor should have happened. The guy actually went to him today to ask why it was so deep and the pro shop guy said oh yea its fine. Is this ok to use or should the guy call bs on it.

You can drill any of the holes as deep or as shallow as needed. Depending on the location of the weight hole and purpose you usually want the hole to hit the core. Typically this increases the dynamics of the ball.

The likely problem may have to do with needed surface adjustment to help fine tune the ball to the lane condition. Carry or hitting like a turd is not just the drilling or the ball its the entry angle of the ball.

…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

Depending on the layout, hole can be drilled as deep as necessary to make the ball statically legal. This is done when a driller does not want to use a weight hole to clear statics. More than likely, I'm assuming they "buried" the finger holes. If so, then he's right and it kept him from using a flare reducing weight hole which would be a no-no for certain styles.

As kid posted, dont be afraid to adjust surface and talk to your driller about the reaction you're seeing. He will be able to help adjust the surface or add a weight hole if needed or possible.

I think the weight hole is the hole he is concerned is drilled too deep.

Misread that badly sorry. Early on the east coast. Lol! That does sound a little funky but as long as it weighs legal its fine. The smaller hole disturbs the core while the bigger hole creates "wobble" or less/more flare/take weight from the side, depending on position. Its the same concept in Double Thumbing the Thumb hole. Take a smaller bit and drill it deep, then drill the actual thumb slug size. I wouldnt do it like that as far as being seen but different drillers have their own methods.
