2007 TOC Pattern
« on: August 23, 2008, 01:59:37 AM »
Was last year's TOC pattern the same as what the PBA has on their web site here?  On the site, it says the TOC is the same as the 2008 Masters (the link I provided since there wasn't any info on the TOC page).  My summer PBA experience league is using it for the position round and I want to know what to expect.  I think we're still using the patterns from last year.  I know the TOC used to be a 50' pattern, but if I remember, that was at least 2-3 years ago.

If so, on the graph, it looks like the first application of oil is heavier and wider than Chameleon (same length pattern).  Would this make it play more like Scorpion?  Play a little deeper and straighter and keep the pocket in play?  Of course, knowing this house, it will play up the ditch no matter what.

In our PBA Experience league, we did the last four weeks on major patterns:  two weeks on the PBA World Championships pattern, and two weeks on the Tournament of Champions pattern.  However, our lane man was not able to get the most recent versions of these oil pattersn -- he was only able to download the 2006-2007 versions, which meant the 50 foot TOC shot.  Last year was the first time they used the Masters pattern for the TOC, since last year was when they had the huge entry of former winners, etc.

If you're on the Masters pattern, odds are it'll be a fairly slick pattern, but don't necessarily get too deep.  You might be able to find a good look playing more direct from outside -- that's how the TV show worked out in the Masters and the TOC last year, but of course the shot always plays differently on TV than during the week.  If you get the 50' shot, be prepared for a flood.  It will dry up quickly (not a lot, but in a hurry), but that just means early hook.  Play a hook/set reaction and completely avoid relying on the almost nonexistent backend.

Thanks Dan.  I didn't remember when they made the switch.  My league doesn't double strip, so the back ends are always mushy.  Two weeks out of 15 they either double stripped or someone did something different to the lane machine because that's how often we saw a defined move on the back.  If I remember, the 50' shot wasn't super heavy, but with only 10' of dry boards, you still can't give the pocket away.  Sounds like another job for the Tour Power.

The ToC pattern was changed this past year in an attempt to accommodate the seniors that were invited to bowl.  I think the idea was that having them bowl in the 50' pattern, which was nothing like they bowled on when they were on tour, would effectively shut them out.  The Masters pattern, or something that was similar to it, was used to make more styles playable.

My experiance with these patterns is move left and play a tight hook to the pocket. I was using the 3rd and 4th arrow and moving my feet to get a small hook. For the 50' I used an AMB particle, which was way too much ball, and a Seek and Destroy which worked really good. Other than the AMB, no ball I saw hooked more than a few boards. Ive found Im better on the medium to longer patterns.
