Flip-Necessity?
« on: February 09, 2004, 01:42:30 AM »
During the midst of my 'experiment' I've realized that I like, roll, I like midlane,....keeping in mind I like strong, but what I realized most is that I don't like flip!

Is this OK ?  Should you have a piece in your arsenal that necessarily 'flips'??

Torgy says in BTM that you should have different break point shapes, ..but he doesn't necessarily say, arc and 'flip'.....

Yes, believe you need at least one.  In fact, for most folks, with medium revs, medium speed, they should be thinking less about smooth and more about getting a harder reaction on the backend to increase carry.  IMHO.

you need flip when you find the only oil is between 20 and 40 and you have to get it out 5. having a flippy ball for such an angle helps so you don't have to get to far out of your game to score.

Jeff: The game is about carry, and arc doesn't always give you the proper angle of entry.

If you do tournaments, think about carrying two balls (one arc, one flip) for each major condition. This saved me in a tournament over the weekend. My Columbia WOW (all arc) stopped carrying during the second game and various adjustments were not getting the job done. I switch to my Ebonite Apex (good flip) and I started stringing strikes again.

It's not about what you 'like' or 'don't like', but instead it's about what works. Be prepared.

Yup, I want to go back up !

I guess I should clarify,....If you like arc, you need something 'sharper' than arc, which still doesn't necessarily mean 'flip' .....but....

I do understand, and should have pieces that do both............thanks

I was wondering the same thing -- I figured if you hit the pocket right, you hit it right so I'll just stick with what I've got...As I watch the best bowler on my team, I see him moving from an arc-y kind of ball to a not necessarily flippy, but definintely sharper angle ball depending on what he thinks is going on.....Maybe they'll explain this all to me at the seminar....

Hey Jeff, I agree with Bones and the guys who say that people who perfer the arcing roll will have harder times with skid/snap.  I am one who greatly perfers the smooth arcing ball to a skid, and dead left turn.  In my experience I find these balls may be more aggressive on hits but are harder to control, and inconsistent unless you KNOW you are releasing the ball absolutely the same way every time.  I have a skid/flip ball and it comes out on very rare occasions when nothing else is working. I do love the reaction it has on dry lanes, but most of the time this ball isn't coming out of my bag.  I find that the easiest adjustment is to go to a weaker arcing ball if things start to dry out.

For my personal bowling, I'd much rather take a few 7's, 10's or 9's spare shooting rather than open splits caused by my ball getting into to much dry.
