Build an Arsenal and other ball websites?
« on: December 25, 2005, 08:09:36 AM »
Are these websites really worth the money? I tried one last night, I put my stats in and it said 6 out the 7 balls I have don't suit my style. I think the work fine for me, but the final stats say no. What's are your thoughts?

I haven't used them, but if there's not a person behind it making the arsenals, then in seems impersonal and simply a filter for what someone thinks would work.  Like the ball selectors on various manufacturer's websites (Track, Storm, Columbia), very limited in what they can suggest or provide.

Given the staggering wealth of knowledge available here and for free from real pro shops and drillers (and, in the Brunswick case, real ball reps), I can't see why someone would pay an anonymous website to suggest balls.

Like pr0n, given the great free stuff on the Internet, why pay for it?

I think they have some merit but the questions asked makes believe they would not necessarily do the job. I thought about doing this a year before others started. I developed a series of questions and realized that the answers would have to be very detailed and specific for it to work. So I did not continue.

Hi Mike. If you had pmed or emailed me, I would have answered you privately, but since you posted on this forum, I feel compelled to respond publicly. When you say that 6 of your balls weren't recommended for your style, you are misleading and misinterpreting what I sent you. In your 8-ball arsenal, you had 2 balls in one slot and 4 balls in another. This does not mean they don't suit your style. If they didn't, they wouldn't be included in any slots. It just means you have a lot of duplication...balls that give you the same look. This is precisely one of the major reasons we designed this website. I experienced bowlers showing up at tournaments with 4 dull particles and 2 skid/flip pearls, thinking they had a varied arsenal and were ready for anything. Too often, they found out quickly they weren't able to stay with the leaders, even though they might have executed well. Many tournaments are carry contests and if you don't have the right rock for your style, you will lag behind. Many others are grindouts, where you have to keep it in play and often those balls you use on a THS won't work. We are trying to help those bowlers who need help select a varied arsenal without wasting money buying the same look over and over. Ours is different than a ball selector on other sites because we don't just use one ball company, we use all balls that have been reviewed by BTM since June of 2000. If you have access to a good ball driller or ball rep who knows your game and can suggest equipment to fit your style, you don't need us. But if you have been guilty of duplicating balls or if you're a pro shop who has trouble staying on top of the 100 or so release every year, then we can probably help you.
