Building an arsenal from scratch
« on: March 05, 2010, 06:03:43 AM »
I bowled throughout high school, both on the high school team and other leagues, averaged around 200 when I was 17/18. Stopped bowling throughout college, and finally decided that I wanted to get back into it. The only balls I currently have is a very, very worn out RockOn and a spare ball, both of which no longer fit and are probably a pound too heavy for me.

I don''t have the ball around me at the moment, so I can''t describe how it is drilled, or exact stats on my bowling style. I would classify myself as a stroker, with low-medium/medium ball speed (maybe about 15-16mph, keep in mind this will probably increase a bit when dropping down a pound as I''ll be controlling the ball, instead of it controlling me), and what I would describe as low-low/medium revs. I do remember the RockOn having an early, arcing reaction to it as opposed to skid/flip, which I liked.

So, if you were me, starting from scratch, which 2 balls, in addition to a spare ball, would you get. I''ve been strongly considering a Mutant Cell or Virtual Gravity for heavier oil situations (or possibly the Jigsaw Corner), but I''m lost for medium/light-medium conditions (Virtual Energy? Black Widow Venom?). The house/league I''d be bowling in would be, typically, a heavier condition, making me lead with the Mutant or VG and switching game 3 when the lanes breakdown.

If you like the arcing motion and want a nice reaction that will last check into the Visionary Ogre line. Great long lasting coverstocks with pearls particles and solids. visionarybowling.com and check out the test staff deal. Good luck!

If you want mid lane with continuation motion, I would say try a Columbia 300 Total Bedlam. It is a heavy oil ball. It gets down the lane easily and then rolls really hard and hits great. Also with lower to medium revs, this ball will allow you to open up the lane a bit more if you need to. The 500/4000 abralon finish really works well. The best part is that it is all the performance of the more expensive Storm and Hammer balls, but at a lower price point.

Also, a Columbia 300 Freeze would be a great lighter oil/burn lanes compliment to this. I have a Total Bedlam and Freeze as my main 1,2 combo for attacking just about any lane conditions. Columbia has made some great equipment as of late.

Thanks for the advice so far guys. I'll have to take a look at the Bedlam as well, missed it in my initial search.

Does the Mutant not have an arcing motion? I was under the impression it did.
