Building your own ball spinner!

I remember a thread or two about this in the past.  I want to write up an article on my website about how to build your own spinner.

Anyone want to help me write this?  Anyone done this before?  

And no, I am not interested in hearing from the guy who thought about placing his ball on the thingie in his washing machine!

Has anyone used an inverted drill press as the basis for a spinner?

I can pick up a new 5 speed drill press for about $40...1/2 inch spindle...steel dog bowl and it should be done for under $60....

I still have the pics that baiki sent me a couple of years ago.  I built mine according to his pics, and 2 years later it's still doing the job.  I also went on the Donkee website to get the rpm speed and did some calculations, and got pulleys that equal their speed.  The motor was about $35 bucks with shipping NIB from Ebay.  They have a ton of them all the time!  I can email the pics also if needed, giving credit to baiki!!!

Baiki, I have about 5-600 RPM. Its only a questimate, but seeing my pro shops new model, said to run 500 RPM then mine is a wee bit faster.
When it was giving the garage a good old flight test I would estimate it about 8-900 RPM.
As you can quess I soon found a smaller pully , balls were flying everywhere.
Boy do I love to experiment.........

If they don't have it, they'll be able to tell you where to get it. Most fractional HP motors are available in 2 speeds. You'll need to install a STSP (Single Throw Single Pole) switch to select speed. You can also ask for a flange mounted frame for the motor for a stronger mounting.

This is a true case. Friend of mine wants to make his own spinner. He have a motor. He have a aluminium cast pot for the bowl. Instead of having a belt drive and pulleys to reduce the speed he mounted the motor onto a wood stool and have the bowl mount straight onto the motor. He got it to work but was very quiet about it. One day I was talking to his elder brother and he told me that they have to drive their cars away when he use it. Have to press down onto the ball all the time and the ball always end up with the CG on top. When I ask him where his motor comes from he said it's a spare furnace motor. You guess it. 3340 RPM.
Makes a pretty good determinator though to find the heavy spot of the ball.

Yesterday, I made a diligent search in my shop for a shaft suitable to mount a ball cup. I found none suitable as most were oversized for my purpose, 1 inch or larger.

I have a small 1/3 HP drill press. One of the el-cheapo models. It will not work as I was able to stop the motor with only a gloved hand.

Today, I am going to take an old, electric motor and remove the armature. My thinking is that the armature will act as a flywheel to maintain speed and torque. The motor's shaft is either 1/2" or 5/8" and should be ideal for a spinner.

I will update this post when I find the suitable parts.

Fencing is hard work. The ground is frozen and putting in fence posts would be WORK.

I rattled around in the shop for two hours yesterday, just looking for materials. It is akin to loafing.

Fencing is hard as all get out! I put up a good 200 yards of it one day, helping my friend and his dad. They live on a farm, and needed a new one, needless to say it took forever! Even with a motorized drill thing, it was real hard work, let alone doing it with the ground frozen!
