dude live and learn... sometimes 6" forward or back on the approach. sometimes 1/2 board right or left. sometimes both. sometimes NOTHING will help and you just smash the pocket and pick up your spares. one thing I tried and found very helpful was magic carpets tip on finger dancing... particularly the pinky tuck one... I use it very often now.
FAILURE IS FEEDBACK. AND FEEDBACK IS THE BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS THAT GOT DIGESTED!

Ten pin?????? Where?? I throw a BUZZSAW there is NUTTIN left on the deck...

just pick up your spares. sometimes it just happens that on some days, a 190 game is a solid game.

When that happens to me (usually with a 10-pin since I am a righty), I used to stare at it for a couple of seconds, and fling my Pink Hammer at it at about 18-19 MPH, (I usually throw 14-15 MPH).  Now I shrug it off and gently send my new Target Zone after it.

As far as adjusting, I rarely move up on the approach (my right foot hangs off the back already).  Instead I try one of these things:
  • Straighten out my pinky finger
  • Point my pinky away
  • Bring my index finger in
  • Move left on the approach by 1/4 board
  • Pull out my Teal Rhino, break my wrist and throw it straight at the 1-2 pocket (that ball carries 80% of the time I do that)
If none of that works, then I would blame the guy that ran the oil machine.

Actually, if all failed it just was not my day to begin with.

1. the 4 letter word.
2. kick the ball return.
3. blame teammates mess up the lane.
4. miss the 10 pin by a mile.
5. repeat from #1.

It really depends on the pin that was not carrying. But I figure you were talking about the dreaded 10 pin . You need to watch what the 6 pin is doing for this is the pin that is suppose to take care of it. There will be multiple choices you can make to carry the 10 pin.

Zack, did you bowl the GMJBT today?  There were a couple fairly decent youth tournaments over the weekend at one of the houses I bowl at, and the first day was the normal house shot we have out, and the second day was the sport pattern we've been using for the adult summer league I'm bowling.  There were some pretty big scores shot on the house pattern (a couple 300's and an 830-something with one of those 3's), but from what I saw of match play on the sport pattern was pretty familiar.  Carry is normally terrible at this house, and I saw plenty of it.  7-10's, solid back row leaves, flat 10's, you name it.  I've seen it from my shots, the adults, and now a group of youths, most of them collegiate bowlers.  They were complaining about the same things I've been complaining about, poor carry.  I think it means a little more coming from some of them, these are guys that practice on sport patterns all the time, a couple go to WSU, a couple to KU, one to CMSU, and these are guys that know what's going on, they're not just going to complain about something for no reason.  Most of it is mathematics, you just have to find the right ball and right line to carry, and sometimes the lanes or pins themselves just won't allow you to.  The only thing you can do is learn to honestly tell yourself whether it's something you can fix, or something that's just not to be.  Work to fix it, but don't beat yourself up if it's just not happening no matter what you do.  Like I'm one to say that, but if you can incorporate it better than I can, it'll be a good thing.

Blame it on a bad rack.  Push the reset button, erase the frame, and start over again.

My instructor says he can teach me anything I want about bowling, except how to carry.  If he had the answer to that, he wouldn't be here teaching.

Turn around, get my spare ball and shoot the spare.  Oh, and adjust my glasses with my middle finger while setting up for the spare.

Then I evaluate: (1) what are the leaves -- 8s, 4s 9s or 10s (if I'm leaving 7s, well, maybe just go home; (2) check my accuracy, is it something I am doing wrong -- am I getting the ball too far inside and sliding or outside and relying too much on recovery.  If it's not an accuracy problem or too much ball then I will generally make an adjustment in loft first, angle second (either by changing balls to get more or less length or by moving), or speed last.   If that doesn't work...watch folks who are carrying to see their breakpoint and try to find a way to get to their breakpoint with my ball.

If none of those work, finish the set, go into the bar and order two double scotches.  Neat.
