CA State Men vs Women
« on: July 11, 2004, 07:01:01 AM »
I just got back from competiting in CA State Tournament in Riverside.  I bowled the CA Women's State Tournament in the Bay Area a few weeks ago.  For anyone who is interested here are some comparisons.

Just for background info- we bowled D/S on Saturdays at 3:30PM (Women's) and 4:45PM (Men's) and Team Sundays 9:30AM (Women's) and 12:30PM (Men's).  The lanes were not used the 1st squad for men's, so it was as if we were the 1st squad.

WOMEN'S STATE
Earl Anthony Lanes in Dublin was a fairly flat pattern of oil (D/S).  No lane oiling between the previous squad and ours.  I had to keep the ball speed down and struggled with finding the right ball and line to use.  I shot 439 Doubles and 506 Singles.

Granada Bowl in Livermore was dry with a decent amount of backend.  The challenge was to keep the speed up on the ball.  I shot 544.

Women's State is a scratch tournament with the women divided into divisions based on an average range.

CA State (formerly Men's State)
AMF Riverside Lanes in Riverside was moderate oil with little backend.  Out of bounds was outside of 10.  Lanes oiled after the prior squad.  Lanes played very similar to my usual house league shot.  I shot 537 for doubles and 594 for singles.

Arlington Lanes in Riverside seemed to have a little more oil, but the slight difference may have been due to the lanes being wood rather than synthetics.  The challenge was finding the correct ball and line during transition, the last half of game 2 and 1st half of game 3.  I shot 575.

Why would the Women put out a tougher shot than the Men?

Which format do you prefer, scratch in divisions or hdcap and no divisions?  Why?

Thong,
Did you bowl WIBC in Wichita this year? How about ABC in Reno?
Of the two, the team shot in Wichita was far more difficult for me than the shot in Reno. I believe it had to do as much with bowling second squad, following (and bowling with) teams of women throwing plastic down the middle as it did with the original lane condition, but the shot for me was far more difficult than it was at ABCs.
The Queens sport tournament shot was much easier than the WIBC team shot.

I too bowled in ABC CA State this past weekend.  And while I cannot compare the conditions to WIBC CA State, I can say that I thought the conditions were easier than I have ever experienced at State before.

My three series were: Team 639; Singles 649; Doubles 643.  And I felt it should have been much higher with some carry in the right places.  But I also felt the shot was too easy because I had 1.5 boards of swing and pull - similar THS.

Last year in Vacaville, the shot was not anywhere near that easy and had serious OB outside of 10.  In Riverside, unlike TP, I found no OB whatsoever at either house.  Arlington had more backend that Riverside but both shots were VERY forgiving.

As for my scratch/handicap preference.  Give me scratch with divisions any day.   Why, because even though CA ABC has their 10 pin average increase re-rate rule, there are still way too many baggers out there for me to ever feel completely comfortable with handicap scoring.  However, I do believe it is a necessary evil for the majority of leagues because you have to make it fair for the (truly) lower average bowlers.

mumzie, I would have liked to bowl WIBC, but have a tough time getting women to bowl tournaments unless they are in our own backyard  I did bowl ABC in Reno and had a blast.  The shot was more difficult than in Riverside this weekend, but not unplayable.

I am hoping to get a team for Tulsa and 2 teams for Baton Rouge for next year.  It looks like we might get 2 teams for CA State in Sacramento for next year.

Clutch Clay, what squads were you bowling?  I wish I'd know you were there, it would have been cool to say "Hi."

TP

Yes, it would have been nice, but based on what you posted, we bowled the events on opposite days.  I bowled as follows:
Team (Arlington Lanes) on Sat at 12:30pm
Singles/Doubles (Riverside Lanes) on Sun at 11:30am
