My very, very small arsenal
« on: July 03, 2006, 02:31:00 PM »
I've been carrying two balls and a spare to leagues, but only really using the Doom.  (I also carry the Big One.)  So really, my arsenal is two balls, the Big One and the Doom.  I want to keep it simple, but I do think I could use one more ball with a different surface or characteristics.  I sometimes have trouble with the Doom getting to be too much ball, so I was sort of leaning towards something for the lighter stuff.  I am interested in the Venus, or maybe a Tropical or a Vibe.  Any other ideas?  You can suggest a different type of ball, as well, if you think it will help me, like a particle for instance.  Thanks!

Slendorlex,

You sound a little like me. I have trouble as the set gets into the third game or so, with length. I love my Doom, and how it hits, but as the lanes dry out, I tend to have to make a big move, either inside or to the extreme outside...or just change balls,....because the Doom becomes too much.

My first suggestion is practice moving on the lanes, and/or changing your hand position slightly. If that is not the answer you really want, then try drilling a Tropical....exactly like you drilled your Doom, and tweak the cover with polish as needed. Good luck.

I know this is off topic, but I just looked at your Bowling Journal. You were doing exactly the same thing I was, with my Doom when I first got it. Two good games and on bad.

I found out you have to chase the oil line. You have to be very aware of what lines everyone else is throwing, and move to where they weren't. That is the only way that you will be able to score consistently with that ball.

For example, my best set this year was a 766, using the Doom all three games. Started out playing up 10, coming up the back of the ball, throwing around 16mph. Shot 266. That line started really drying up, halfway thru the second game. Shot 221. Made a big move inside to 23, because most of the straightballers were playing between 12 to 20. For my third game, shot a 279, playing a big swing shot, and coming around the ball.

Now, not saying this to brag, but the results proved it. You have to be ready to move.....and sometimes it has to be a big move.

I am down to a total 4 ball arsenal and I plan to keep it that way.  I have a stronger reactive in the Silver Streak Pearl, weaker reactive in the Power Groove Reactive, A urethane with the Trooper, and plastic with a White Dot.  I see having 4 balls at the most.

Strong Reactive
Weak Reactive
Urethane
Plastic

This is also because I have alot of hand to make anything move.  I would also add a partice if you dont have alot of hook.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Doom, it can just be a little too much when the pattern really dries out.  If anything, I'll replace the Big One with something else.  I have found very little use for that particular ball.

Any other thoughts on what I should do?

I would lean towards a stronger drilled Saturn before I would get a Venus. If you got a Venus that would make 2/3 of your arsenal particle, and if your Doom is too much you may have some trouble trying to ball down to a particle ball.

Hmm...I don't have anything particle.  The Big One is a reactive solid, and the Doom is a reactive pearl.  I was thinking about the Venus since, if I understand it right, it's kind of like a Mercury with a light particle load.

Since you really seem to like the Ebonite/Hammer stuff, I would recommend the Black Ice by Ebonite.  It will get down the lane easier and cleaner than the Doom on the drier conditions with a predictable move on the backend.  Plus, it is a good looking ball as well. I know quite a few people in my area that love theirs as a third game ball.

My bad, I thought the Big One was particle. I should have done more research . In that case (with what you said previously), the Venus should be spot on to what you are looking for.
