Can Barnes take over PBA Title Lead?
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:55:21 AM »
Everyone knows how well Barnes has been bowling lately. He has seemed to lose the TV intimidation and can win regularly. With that being said, Chris has about 10-15 more years to go. Do you think he can pass Walter?

Chris Barns is NOT a WRW or ANTHONY. Never has been. Without question, Barns has talent but when it comes to being able to STRIKE when he needs to, his law of percentages is less than his normal stike precentage. What makes WRW and ANTHONY so great was that you could count on them striking everytime they needed a strike as there "must strike" percentage was higher than there normal strike percentages.

If Barns had ~25 more years he would stand a chance. Barns needs to figure out what in his head is causing his inability to strike at will. If he does, then he could concievably go on a tear that would make everyone look silly. Its funny, you look at ANTHONY and WRW and you dont see exceptional physical games, you see what looks to be average phyiscal games... but they have extrodinary mental games.

If they added enough of these formats where he has more than a single game match to beat his opponent it might happen.

In a traditional step ladder or even the 2 single game matches he has more trouble.

But like others I don't think so. Besides there may not be a tour in a couple years.

I think people tend to forget that Barnes did not join the PBA till he was in his late twenties which probably cost him another 10+ titles on the resume. Due to the late start he has no chance to be the alltime wins leader. I due think before his career is over you will see one season with a run at Roth's record of 8 titles in a year.

As good as he is, there simply aren't enough tournaments in a season for that to be feasible.  As others have said, if he were 30, maybe he'd have a good shot.  I figure him for 20-25 titles, but even as often as he's on TV, if he won twice as often as he does now, he'd still need 15+ years to catch up.

WRW has 160+ TV appearances and 44 titles to show for it.

Barnes is around 60 appearances(?) with 10 titles I think. At this rate Barnes should end his career with around 25-30 titles.

I don't think he's going to be able to catch WRW.  In fact, I dont think anyone that's currently on the PBA will beat WRW record.

Keep in mind that WRW will be joining the Sr. tour soon which should increase his title record by a lot.

doubt it lets see IMHO
Tj 12 titles 30years old  maybe if he bowled till 50 but with that backswing doubt it

wes 6 titles 32years has the type of swing and the versatility to win several for a long time

rash 4 titles 26years doesn'tt have the all around game

rhino 2 titles 25years all the ability in the world but last few shows kinda reminds me of barnes with bad throws on clutch shots

oneal no titles but if he could get that first one he could be great had strong all around game

duke 32 titles and 4 years younger than walter if he keeps up his winning then he may have a chance hes the only viable shot i see right now with weber on the downslide of his career and bohn virtually absent from the tv finals compared to his good days.

the talent is too thick out there for anyone to win that many titles in the pba they would have to start in there very early 20's and average 2 a year till there in there 40's cause lets remember walter still bowling and i would say will finish with 46 titles before its all said and done

I read your post and would like to comment.

Tommy Jones - not versatile enough. His backswing won't be the thing to hamper him when he gets older, it will be yacking on the ball with his wrist as hard as he does.

Wes Malott - verdict is still out. I believe he is "overrated". His equipment has matched up very well this year, but so has everybody that has thrown Storm or Roto-Grip. He has made shows exploiting the same part of the lane every time. Don't believe me....rewatch. Not sure if this qualifies as versatile. Get him out of his comfort zone - he's done. Next week's US Open will be good example.

Sean Rash - I will agree. Brunswick stuff is too rolly for what is demanded...at least this year. Ask Mika.

Rhino Page - he can only win when the PBA gives him a gift....PERIOD.

Bill O'Neill - falls in same category as Malott this year.

Norm Duke - what can I say about him. He should be able to bowl forever. I believe he has a shot.

Chris Barnes - Chris is all around the best bowler on tour. He is in a league of his own. The things he can do with a bowling ball inside and out aren't rivaled by many. The only thing is his inability to win on TV. He makes enough shows every year to definitely win 40 - 50 titles before his career is over. But this would mean he would have to win a majority of the appearances he makes.

My 2 cents.

Didn't he get caught cheating with the nanny at one point? Correct me if I am wrong, but thats what I heard from a few guys on tour. As far as the question of him catching WRW Jr., not a chance.

One other thing....what makes anybody think Walter will stop winning?

I think Morich will have to make a ball that he can use to his strengths that don't burn up so much before the point. As of right now, they don't and everybody on tour knows this. When Walter makes a show, there will be alot of defensive bowling in practice to burn a hole where WRW will be throwing.

OOPS, I said too much.

You are saying Wes is overrated and not really versatile, but didn't he win and qualify first in the tournament that was bowled on every condition, the etonic championship?  How does that not show versatility?
