« on: February 22, 2005, 12:08:00 AM »
Ok, Ive been going through a bit of a slump the last month, dropped 20 pins on my average.. and just cant throw right.
I get aches in my knee after bowling,
and also my hand, not my rist, but my hand, in the palm.

Any ponters would be good.

Your hand ache's are from your span of your bowling balls and the way you release it. Try to fix your release its terrible. You need to relax. Try and arch your arm back up smoothly. and Release the ball instead of lobbing it.

They are working better. man....lets get to work. hehe
1)Your bending at your waist, not your knees. You need to bend at your knees.
2)You are not following through on spare shots. This is really bad. Your spare shot should be the same exact swing as your strike shot, just with a different release if needed.
3)Take your time man! My god! Like lane1 said, your rushing wayyyy too much. I mean, I know you shouldnt over think your shots but you should think about them at least a little bit before you throw the ball.

yes, rushing is one of my main problems.

As for the ball span,
the pro shop I used to use was run by a couple of locals, this has now closed and there should be a new one opening in april, the guy who's going to run it plays in a lot of tournys and should be a bit more able to help.

I think my thumb hole is too big, else the ball generaly fits ok,
I havnt had a problem with it for 2 years, up until last month, when my palm started aching.

Just have one thing to mention that I saw.  Most people in general try to have the same preshot routine.  For some people it means wiping the ball for every shot, others it is grabbing the ball and the list goes on and on.  Try to have the same routine for each shot whether it is to get the ball set in your hand before your feet move or whatever makes you comfortable.  What I noticed with you is it looks like you halfheartedly just throw the ball for your spares.  You need to concentrate on your spares just like your first shot.

It does not matter what type of shot you throw, it's the results on the scoresheet that counts.

number one. first and foremost. you have no set-up. you grab your gear and immediately start up the approach. try... setting in on your mark, if even for 2 seconds. i always get my hand into the ball, fingers first... and stand on my marks and focus on my arrow for a good 3 seconds. then i begin my approach. if you are too rushed, you will continually make errors for the simple fact that your body has no rhythm and gets lost. muscle memory is 95% of a PBA bowler's success. they subconciously make the RIGHT adjustments. watch some of them on TV: rarely do they even look at their feet. they get set and might glance: they know where they need to be, how deep on the approach, etc. repeating shots starts with repeating your setup.

number 2. bend lower at the knee. practice without the ball. i do it all the time: slide without the ball, and practice letting yoru knees do the work of lowering you. i have shorter arms, and i am almost 135* at the knees/60* waist to get the ball within 2" to 4" of the deck. lofting kills revs and leads to more innaccuracies.

what is your targeting system?

your span needs to be checked, pronto. i drive 42 miles to see my driller, for a good reason: he does it RIGHT.
