Can oil be too much for some balls by the 2nd game & beyond
« on: January 16, 2004, 07:10:04 PM »
I went bowling last night at a house I haven't been too since i started bowling again in last October. Usually these lanes are known for being dry, but that wasn't the case tonight.

My first game I shot a 211. Second game 155, third game 144, 4th game 173.

The first game I noticed my ball coming out of the return with massive amounts of oil on it. I tried to keep it clean as possible.

I noticed by the second game my ball just wasn't reacting like it did in the first game. I was throwing the same everytime and could see the revs or rotations or whatever, but it just wasn't reacting on the back end. By the last game I feel that the oil was too much for my ball, I ended up just about shooting straight at the pocket and managed to hit my average.

I was bowling on the 1st lane, maybe nobody used it all day. Who knows, but it was heavily oiled up. More so than any other lane I have seen since I started bowling again this past October.

Is it possible that the lane conditions were too much for my urethane ball?

Very much so.  When you are using a urethane bowling ball on heavily oiled lane conditions, you will NOT get the same reaction or as much power when hitting the pocket.  You would need to get a more aggressive bowling ball that would create more traction with the lane with will increase the hook.  The urethane ball most likely just skidding through the oil and not really getting the chance to hook or roll.  For a good successful and consistent shot you ball needs to go through 3 different stages:  skid, hook, roll.  If your ball never gets past the skid part then it won't be creating that friction with the lane causing it to just hit "flat" and will cause terrible pin action.  You want you ball to be rolling into the pins when it hits the pocket.  I would definitely recommend a more aggressive bowling ball.  If you cannot afford a new bowling ball or just simply don't want to buy one for a house that you barely bowl on, then...  I would suggest to try and put more of a forward roll the ball that way it doesn't have that much of a chance to be skidding as much as it would before and also allowing the ball to hit the pocket harder with creating more pin action.

I was thinking carrydown was the issue myself. My ball was skidding like crazy.

At first I slowed down my ball speed so it would hook, then it was hooking and coming up high on the head pin.  After a while i played a straighter line.

I was able to shoot straight at my spares and pick those up. Usually my ball will hook away from the spares when i shoot straight on drier lanes, but this time there was so much oil that the ball went straight everytime.

My Urethane Ebonite Gyro is only good for medium oil at best. I would like to get a ball good for medium to heavy oil when funds permit.

I was considering these balls

Hammer Big Blue Particle
Ebonite Vortex II Strong
Brunswick Warp Zone
Ebonite Predator Jungle Green Particle

Whats the best of the group?
