Only a 240 average?
« on: March 07, 2004, 05:45:54 PM »
one of our majors in the area, the Hannum tournament held at Park Centre lanes in canton ohio is always a bomb fest. But this was ridiculous, it took a +190 to make THE TOP TWENTY!

3 800s in the first 3 games, my friend shot 258 the first game and was 16th.

I went down to see if my friend had made cut, and all i saw were local league hacks competing still in the cut, not one what i would consider premier scratch bowlers in the area except maybe one or two.

I mean high scores are ok, but this is absurd, and it wasn't the best players striking. any thoughts on this? I mean how can this be a tournament, i am glad i didn't bowl in it and donated my 100 bucks

i know about 5 other top area bowlers who did not attend. I grew up bowling there, and i can average 230 as well as anyone there, but that isnt good for a sniff of anything

I shot a handicap tournament yesterday. It is a 40+ tournament group, so although there are some good bowlers in the mix, there are lots of guys 50+ just out to have a good time....
That said (and knowing full well it was handicap when I walked in the door)
I made the cut. The first game of the finals I shot 280 with my handicap (14) and bonus pins (30). I was in 4th. the guy in the lead had 344 for the FIRST GAME. How, you say? He shot 290, got 30 bonus pins for the match, and 24 pins handicap. If I'd shot 300, I would have tied him...
Here were my games yesterday -
225-210-215-203-231 in the qualifying. Got me 8th. I'll bet I was 1st or 2nd scratch. Only won $4.25 in high game pots, though...
Finals - 236-191 (7-10 in the 10th to lose the match...), 203-226
Ended up 5th. I was 76 pins out of first after the 4 games of finals - I shot 1000 even with 90 bonus and 56 handicap total. that's a 250 average with handicap and bonus. And was only good for 5th.
The winner shot 1076 - that's a 269 average with bonus and handicap.

In my area you have something just like this. The "best" bowlers in the area bowl in the easiest house. SO are they really the best bowlers in the area? I walked into this house and bowled really well and shot 300 in a benefit sweeper. I averaged 244 for 6 and qualified 8th out of 16. I bowl in the most difficult bowling alley in my area and average 215. With that said, are those guys that bowl on the cake shots really better than I am? A guy left the center I bowl in with a 178 average. He is averaging 220 at this house and has 3 300 games already. I went up and watched him bowl, he does not one thing different than he did before, same bad habits in approach and release etc....but he really thinks he is that much better.

i feel your pain.

tuesday night, tough 42' sport shot = 153 average.

wednesday night wall = 171 average.

sunday morning 30' THS = 185-193 average over our customary 6 games.

am i really 40 pins better in the morning than at 9 pm???

i don't care who makes it, how much it costs, or how sexy the ball looks. can i carry the 7 and level the deck with a $60 ball?
