So i was practising...
« on: November 11, 2003, 12:24:16 PM »
As some of you may or may not have read, i bowled like a fool on the weekend just gone. 2 well sub 500 series. I went out to practise today, and i normally average in the 215 range in practice. I took my plastic with me, i havnt bowled with it in a few years, and unlike most bowlers my age, my spans havnt changed since.

I warmed up and the lanes were playable like always. I thought to myself, the practise ive been doin got me knowwhere on the weekend, so lets try something different. Much to my dads suprise i picked up my plastic ball, and didnt touch anything else for the first 6 games till my dad begged me to bowl with a 'proper ball' as he put it. I averaged 205 with the plastic, something i have never done before... that being averaged the card with plastic.

Then picked up my apex obsession, and bowled 480 for 2 games. Now i know in a tournament i would prefer to be shooting the 240 average over the 205 average.... but what holds more credibility... 205 average for 6 games with plastic... or a 240 average over 2 games with particle. My opinion is the 205 with the plastic.

Which got me to thinking... im going back to the center that i bowled on last weekend for the final part of the tournament. I was gettin a really over under reaction all weekend. Should i start with the plastic first ball out of the bag if the conditions havnt changed?

Opinions?
Good luck and high scoring

Lets look at things in context Matt.  205 average with plastic isn't too shabby.  However, you averaged this with no one else on the lanes tracking up the shot.  Also, I always seem to score higher in practice.  No pressure, arm stays loose.  What's going to happen once you have 5-10 people on the lanes.  205 looks like the maximum you can get with plastic and those scores just won't cut it in a tournament.

Yea i know it was open play. thats why im not making a big deal of it. And with the tournament. Its 2 people to a pair, so not alot of tracking. When i bowled today there was school kids on before me, so tracking was plenty there.

Thing is with the type of tournament it is, 205 could win, when a 215 could loose. Cause its head to head, double elimination, its all who you play and when you play them. Im just wondering it would make sence to use the plastic, to eliminate the over under reaction... I worded my post poorly, sorry.

Just might be a good option.  With plastic you should be able to keep your ball in play.  At the same time you could be messing up your opponents shot the way plastic carries the oil down the lane.  If you get in a hole, you could always switch to something more agressive.

How about a regular urethane ball, that would eliminate the over/under plus be able to handle more oil than the plastic ball. Another option is a more end over end release which will smooth out the reaction as the ball comes off the oil, then you could play with a reactive or particle ball, depending on how much oil is out there.
