Ball cleaning/maintenance
« on: March 21, 2008, 02:42:39 AM »
Hey guys,

I've been bowling for about 2 months now, after each set I clean my bowling balls with either a wipe 'n strike wipe (the green package) or with Legends cleaner.
This is about all I do, besides the fact that before every ball I throw I clean it with a cotton towel.

Question 1: wipe 'n strike & legends are good cleaners right? is it good to use them both, or is it better to stick with 1 cleaner?

Question 2: If I don't notice any change in performance on the balls, is this enough? Or should I consider hot water baths and stuff after 'x' games just out off precaution?

Thanks for reading, and reaction... really important to me, balls aren't cheap here in Belgium, and I would love to hold them as long as possible ! (really happy with my current line-up so far)

Greetz.

every 30-35 games you should take it to a proshop were they can give it a good cleaning sand it down a lil to get all dirt and grime off that you cant otherwise and then they will put it back to your finish for 3 bucks

IMO using a cleaner thats really good like legends or black magic removes almost all dirt and oil.

I would only bring it to a pro shop if:

A. it looks like the ball is worn where you track

B. the ball may be either loosing its original reaction or you feel it needs to be resurfaced due to all the games bowled on it.

I dont really agree with sanding the ball down at just 35 games... if that was the case id be in the pro shop every 3 weeks.

also I believe balls that are VERY agressive such as the new solids like black widow will need to be surfaced earlier then others as they seems to get worn much faster then balls which are harder in general.

this is all IMO... please keep that in mind.... btw ive only had 1 ball die and it was the only ball i didnt always clean as it just never matched up to my game in the first place.

Not true, as far as I know.

If you can't get the dirt off, then sure as shooting, they can't.

Sanding changes the surface unless you're sanding it the exact same as you have it. Then you still don't need to do it, UNLESS it's sanded to 2000 or 4000 grit.

Using a good regular cleaner such as Legends cleaner and a deep cleaner once every 12 - 20 games like Clean and DUll is good.

If you bowl on heavy oil with a dull sanded ball, then you need maintenance on a more frequent schedule. If so, then you might need a rejuvenation every 60 - 100 games, more or less. Polished balls or bowlign on lighter oils need less to a lot less deep cleaning and rejuvenation.
