Shur-Hook, Corks, and a like...need opinions
« on: May 04, 2012, 03:27:41 PM »
I recently got away from using Ron C's carpet tape. The product is great, I've been using them for years. But, I developed discoloration on the back side of my thumb and because of the fictions from the carpet tape, it caused my thumb to swell really bad. So, I'm looking for a different alternative for the back side of my thumb hole that I can use with my HADA patch.

I have 3 balls that need to fill this space that the carpet tape once occupied. Also, I've lost a few pounds and I'm finding myself placing more tapes in the thumb hole. I've got 3-5 white tapes in the back with black tape over it and one or two tapes on the pad side of my thumb. my thumb swells and shrinks during play and tinkering the thumb is becoming constant.

I know about the corks, but what about the shur-hook or any other products that bowlers use behind the thumb. Back in the day, I've seen the cork used in the front/pad side of the thumb, but never on the back side.

I just need something to snug up my thumb fit, controlling the amount of tape in the front to one or two tapes, and allows my thumb to stay secure and relaxed during my swing.

With Carpet my thumb was still snug. I added/subtracted tape up front to keep it snug. It's the years of using MC that my thumb got the way it did - the color and texture. Many times I would make the fit tighter, thus more friction. Never do I bowl with a loose thumb fit, just feels weird and even with my forward pitch, I'll release too early if my thumb fit isn't snug. MC is a great product, I just don't want to use it anymore.

Since you were already using Magic Carpets and lost weight, could you have been bending your thumb to hang onto the ball?  This would put more pressure on the back of the thumb and thus, more friction from the Magic Carpet and irritation there.

I know that when I first started using Magic Carpet, the back of my thumb got sore, but after a few weeks the skin toughened up and I've had no issues since.

I don't know what thumbillow is but I'm sure that sur cushion from Ace Mitchell is a lot less expensive!

I have found a thick silicon based tape that I use in the front of the thumb hole.  Put it in High and the thumb will be tight.  Put it in Low and you can get out of it real easy.  I don't crook my thumb, so there is no problem with caluses on the back of the thumb.  I put it in low just to give me something to grip on to.  Don't normally use anything in the back of the hole other than some sure slide powder.

I use the shur cusion and get redness and also with the Magic Carpet.

I use the thumb billow and don't.  I am sorry you are having to pay so much for them and have to buy so many of the thumbbillows.

the billow are pricey...very pricey lol I was hoping for one sample, but I don't ask. Ron Clifton sent me a sample before I purchased the bundle. even the Beans guys (before lane1) sent me a sample.

Anyway, the best solution for the three balls is to have the balls reslugged. I don't use these balls much anymore. but with the sport/scratch leagues around the corner and several tourneys this summer, I might ended up using them lol

The 'billows are a bit pricey, but they last quite a while. I use the Vise IT, so that helps reduce the cost quite a bit.

I'll be @ Strikes (Elk Grove) Saturday between 1 and 4 for a Match Club event. I'll still give you one to try if you want.

thanks. I got to remember that.

I belong to the Landpark MC....we might have bowled on the same pair in the past when both our MC had a match :D

You've gotta to know ryan wong? he bowled out of stockton before, and he still lives there. we bowl together in leagues and in MC too.

Anyway, I'll see you then.

Ron Clifton is one of the best guys out here and Magic Carpet is a fine product.

The cheapest of them is the Shur Hook if cheap is your objective.

Luckylefty
PS the thumbbillow is the most expensive.
