Can you be proud of this?
« on: March 10, 2004, 03:51:51 PM »
Since I've been using my X-Factor, I've made more strikes than I think I had my entire 5 months before it arrived!  Last night, I start with a 232 and I tell my buddy it's not me, it's the ball.  I had a 6 or 7 strike string and the only reason I missed the next one is because the ball slipped out of my hand!  How can I take any kind of pride in a score I know wasn't truly because of me?  Granted, I had to give a good release and hit my marks, etc., etc., but after that it was just watch the ball turn and trash the deck!  It's kind of like my golf game.  The best overall year I had was 2 years ago when I was using my Ping Eye2 irons -- barely ever missed a green.  They made the game almost too easy.  Unfortunately I can't putt, so my scores didn't really drop too much.  Anyway, while that was my best ball striking season, I'm more proud of getting my league handicap down to 1 last year using my blades.  I may not have hit the ball as well, but I came through when I missed the greens and saved my pars.  There was more true skill involved.......Sorry for the ramble -- just having a crisis of conscience.....

Don't forget, many times when somebody pulls out a new ball or a different ball, that change forces their concentration level to up, therefore making better shots.  It's never the ball, it's all about focus and physically doing everything right.

I saw the pros at a pro-am last week all pick up plastic balls and bury the pocket striking shot after shot.  A good ball helps, but even the best ball is worthless without the good shot to go with it.

Did you ever stop to think that it just helped you match up better to the condition? Try the ball on another condition and see if it still works

Part of the game these days is matching up the ball to the conditions. Make that choice correctly, and it's wonderful. Make a bad choice, and it can be very, very bad.
Combined with a consistent release, and hitting your target, that's what it's all about!
Good bowling.

OK -- I took your advice and just got over myself.  No matter what the conditions, you have to lay the ball down consistently to score.  I finally did it!!  I rolled 185-188-255 in my Sunday league for my first 600 in 14 years!!!  In the third game, I had an open in the 2nd, then rung up 8 strikes before I was little late on my release in the 10th.  I can say 2 of the last 3 were pretty lucky (I was gagging!!) -- both brooklyn with the one leaving a 5-6-10 that somehow went down.  My son also broke 100 for the first time in the league -- he got a new 8 lb. on Thursday and he loves it plus it's mowing down the pins!
