Candlepin....eww
« on: October 18, 2007, 03:58:47 PM »
I have only "heard" of Candlepin bowling but never have tried it much less ever seen it. Finally saw it on YouTube. Reminds me exactly like duckpin bowling. A novelty game you could find at an arcade or something. I found duckpin fun but couldn't take it seriously. I thought Candlepin bowling was a Canadian sport you hear about once every 5 years like Curling but apparently it has some minor attraction in Massachusetts area. I saw some pros on it...looks like from the early 90's. I couldn't believe it was ever televised and for all I know it's not anymore. So it looks like Duckpin bowling with tiny balls but instead of little fat pins they are tall, slender, plastic things.
When I watched these "pros" they never did the same thing twice. Just aimlessly tossing the little ball down the lane smacking sticks around and hope it carries. Then the weird part of you get 3 balls a frame. I heard Candlepin is fun and hard. But I look as it now as hard and stupid. Please tell me I'm wrong and there is actually skill in this and how it is even in the same conversation as regular bowling.

I'm sure that there's a method to their maddness.  But that's according to our 10 pin mentality.

Its kind of like wondering why the helicopter bowlers keep existing even if different lane conditions are introduced.

You just don't have enough personal information about it, to make a real judgement beside one that's just at the surface.

::shrug:: never did the same thing twice works for their game.

The problem is that there are so few candle pin and duck pin bowlers out there compared to 10 pins that its difficult to get good comparison information.  At least they must be less vocal.

But I grew up in New England and my folks bowled 10 pin and they had to search out 10 pin lanes and even when I started bowling, I had to drive out of town to find 10 pin bowling lanes.  Its a regional thing.

Brian, I will tell you first hand that there is just as much skill in candlepin bowling as there is in our sport.  My mother's cousin was a pro at that.  I believe his average was somewhere around 150-170...guessing since he passed away probably 5-7 years ago and I haven't been in Mass since 1990 or so.

I bowled it and unlike what we do....there really isn't give area...track...nothing.  Most everyone that was good could hit a mark, but the ball was thrown straight as an arrow.  It is hard....significantly harder than 10 pin bowling will ever be.  If you think it's hard and frustrating to take the 6 out of the 3-6-10.....imagine what it's like to take the 1-5 out of a full rack on a shot!!

That may be the one reason why it didn't grow big.....because compared to 10 pin and duck pin, it was hard to score the big games.

I moved to Boston about 10 years ago and I can tell you candlepin is alive and well. I've tried it over the years and IMO it's a completely different game. The techniques and gameplay are not the same.

Candlepin is A LOT harder than tenpin. Take a look at their world records.

I was on TDY in Boston and I will attest to the difficulty of this game.  It is hard....enough said.

Duckpin is tough.  I've never seen candlepin, although now I want to visit Boston to try it out!    We had a company outing at a duckpin alley, and the highest score out of 100 people was 107.  I played 2 games and shot something like an 88 and a 95.  It was a blast! You know, there is a duckpin alley here in town that I've never been to (2 lanes added onto a sports bar/grill).  I might have to try it out again!

Having bowled candle pin for most of my younger life in Maine, I can tell you that there is skill involved. It is not just a matter of rolling the ball down the lanes and hoping that it carries.

You do not get the dead wood sweeped away like in ten pin, it stays there and you need to figure out how to hit it so it will help carry the pins that are still standing.

You can just grip it and rip it, but there are alot of people that do that in ten pin as well. Take a trip and try it sometime. You will have a new respect for the bowlers that can score 120+ in candle pin.

Excuse my arrogance on Candlepin bowling, I've just seen these videos and they are almost amusing to me. I've never seen this before. None of these guys on You were doing anything the same. It's madness alright.
Why even roll it? I'd just overhand the ball at least on the first ball. I did that at an amusement arcade place and after struggling rolling the ball in Duckpin and couldn't control the ball I tossed it overhand and was racking strikes. It was like hitting those milkbottle midway games at the fair.

If you weren't a "bowler" bowler, and you didn't know much about the game, you wouldn't think there's much to our game would you?  I bet candlestick bowlers have a technique of their own, but I've looked at averages, and they aren't much higher than 130.

I've done it before, and I have to say, at first it's fun, but after a game, I could not stand it anymore.  You throw 2 frames at a time, with up to 3 shots per frame, and the rack doesn't come down after each one, so you'll tire yourself up SO fast, and you can't focus.  You also move a lot faster on the approach, so I bowl in sneakers.  I also can't believe that the lanes are oiled with the same patterns or patterns as complex as ten-pin patterns, but that could be just my lack of knowledge about the game.

ericob, it's been a long time since he bowled.  Like I said, I knew he passed away at least 5-7 years ago...maybe even more, and he was bowling when I was younger.

130 avg is good in candlepin. I think the highest 3 serie, ever made, in candlepin is 500ish.

Do they use standard balls and are the lanes oiled?
