Need advice on release change
« on: December 03, 2009, 08:00:19 PM »
I''m thinking of changing my release from alot of side roll to an up the back, Norm Duke, style in order to be more consistent. What I''m wondering is what layouts and surfaces generally work best with this style? Any help would be appreciated.

Up the back tends to roll up early but not cover many boards. That being the case for me sometimes I use up energy early as the night goes on and my ball really does not cover more boards. Then when I move inside more, up the back does not recover as much.

I have found that I need longer pins/mb to pap layouts in general. But that being the case I also need more equipment than many because of early burn altering covers and weight blocks.

My natural tendancy is up the back especially when I need a strike. I agree with Deadbait. If you do that well now, learn to read the lanes quickers so as not to pay the penality by sudden reaction.

For me, side roll works very well when the oil pattern is the right length. If it is too long or too short I suffer. Whenever I go to the more up the back release I always have something I can work with. Might not be the highest scoring potential but I'm not leaving splits all over the place. Maybe I should set up a ball for an up the back release and when the side roll doesn't work switch to that ball.

It's my experience that balls with stronger drillings work a little better when I'm throwing with more forward roll...but I have issues with hand because of tendonitis.

I'll usually bring at least one solid or strong pearl drilled 4x4 that I can use for (1) an up the back "down and in" shot or (2) a heavier oil pattern when I need the ball to get into an earlier roll.
