300 vs. an Ace in golf... A Bonesian Musing

Had a shot at 300 Friday night again and only managed to get the front 10 and leave a nice 8 pin on the 11th ball (289).  The usual rubber legs and numb hands were still there as always for me.

Question is -

People compare shooting 300 to a hole in one in golf all the time, even though the ace is more difficult in most people's opinion.  What sort of things in golf give you the rubber legs, sweaty palms, and any other nervous symptom you can think of?

Maybe that is what your first 300 in bowling should be compared to?  After all, there are more accomplished bowlers out there than me that are probably cool as a cucumber when facing the chance at a perfect game.

I'd imagine going for your first ever eagle putt or something like that would be more comparable.  From the difficulty aspect the perfecto and ace go together but like you said, nobody knows that they will shoot the hole in one.  Another nerve-racking situation would be when you have a chance to shoot your personal best, but need to get a birdie or whatever on the last hole.  I'd imagine many golfers would smack it OOB.

A hole in one is so tough to do that I don't think anybody ever REALLY hopes to put one in off the tee.  A 300 I think is the only thing that really builds and builds your nerves as you go along.  Even in practice when nobody is watching, it's still something.  A low golf round is about the only thing you can really compare it to.  I don't really know if that would do it though.  When I shot my first 300, I was pretty new to bowling.  I'm pretty new to golf right now, and I can guarantee you I wouldn't be nervous at all going for a low golf round, just because it'd all be gravy if I did better than I expected.  There's really no magical score to go for in golf, there's always a lower score to be had whether it's actually attainable or not.  I was shaking like a chihuahua when I got up in the 10th of my first 300.

I would say a 300 is like going through a round of golf with 18 consecutive birdies for 18 under par for the round...

achivable, yes, but still very difficult...

That's a stretch.  The 300 isn't THAT difficult.  Anyone who golfs knows it'd be far harder to even go -12 than to shoot a 300.

 Shooting every hole as a birdie is just about impossible to us amateurs,and even the pros will shy away from the tucked pins and hope to make birdie,but are happy with par.
 One thing however,that I read awhile back is that in the golf schools overseas that are for the juniors trying out for national teams,they actually teach that every hole is a birdie hole. Annika and her sister were brought up on this system,as were other stars like Liselotte Neumann.
 According to the article,this removes the fear of trying to hit the perfect shot and allows the player to relax and swing fully and freely,which usually produces a good result.

300 is like a hole in one after the fact (in my opinion). The feeling of accomplishment. People shaking your hand in your group or even around the clubhouse. Potentially getting your name in the paper (in this area---dont know how that works elsewhere). This is the case for bowling in this area also. So the reaction is the same. Maybe a little more shock with a hole in one whereas a on the 12th ball, you know if you throw it good or not. In golf, its the right bounce and roll and drop. The closest Ive come on a golf course was within 3 feet. To me the sense of accomplishment was pretty high because it was a quality shot. It was like I bounced the ball off a tree and it flopped on the green right where I wanted it to.

I get sweatty and nervous every time I tee off, why?  B/c I don't have a clue where the ball is going.  I don't get nervous over putts, I've had one shot at eagle, missed in short by 12 feet.

If you took a 150 average bowler and a 25 handicap golfer.  The chances of getting either one are slim.

I've done Both, thrown a 300 (or 30 ) and had a hole in one. Both take incredible luck to happen. I really can't say which is more difficult becasue there is more luck involved than anything else. It is more difficult to shoot low in golf than it is to shoot high in bowling. I have had a low round of 67 in my golfing career. That was back in the day when I used to play alot. I'm lucky if I play 12 rounds a season now. Overall, golf is more difficult than bowling.

the first time i shot under 70 i had about a 30 foot birdie putt on 18 for 69. that was the closest thing to the feeling when i shot my first 300, but still not nearly as bad.

now-the adrenaline rush after shooting a 300 i think can be matched by golf...

I know a guy a senior from Middleton, WI that shot 300 and had a hole in one on the same day.

Now that's a feat!

There are lots of situtations that make me as nervous in golf as in bowling.  I've had 2 aces but there were no nerves because there was no expectation.

However, teeing off in our A-Team club matches in front of 10-20 other near scratch or scratch golfers on a 460 yard par 4 with water running all the way down the right can be nervewracking.  Or standing on the 18th hole with a chance to tie or break your best ever low round.  Or having 225 over water to reach a par 5 in two with the match on the line.

Nowadays, I rarely get that adrenaline flowing in bowling as I do on golf.  Even when I'm just playing Sunday afternoons with a few friends, the challenge to try to go low is always there.

Shooting a 300 is like ... playing 5 under your handicap.  In other words, it is approxmitely like a 12 handicapper shooting a sub 80 round, or a four shooting a 71.
