Carry Down
« on: July 09, 2008, 12:35:41 AM »
What does a bowler do for heavy carry down? Last night I started with 235.
All of a sudden a seven ten left on a pocket hit. Next frame ten pin left,
next frame ten pin,Change balls to a more aggressive ball, next frame four nine
on a pocket hit, I finished with a 145. Help.

I don't know wat u did on the carrydown but I'm pretty successful in carrydown n heavy oil situations. I like to keep the same line but get softer with my speed. If the ball doesn't hook I move left n keep my hand behind the ball to get it started sooner down lane.If that doesn't work then I keep the same hand behind ball release and move my breakpoint closer to the head pin and the same slow speed. That's just.my .02.

Are you sure it was carrydown? Waht did the ball do? Did it juts not hook anymore, or did you have the impression that it would slip through its intended breakpoint, missing the pocket outside? You can also check the oil rings on the ball, if you face lots of oil or very little.

In the first case, it can be simply the lack of oil, and the ball burns up with a weak carrying power. If it is the second case, it is more lileky that true carrydown is involved. For me, reducing speed normally does th job, too, or I move my line closer to the gutter and "play around" the hazardous area, also matching my spare tactics. As an alternative, using a stronger ball and/or a deepr line has also been quite successful, but I prefer the "straighter-at-the-outside" alternative because it is more suitable for my style and bears IMHO less risk.

same as dizzy but I also found that getting tighter can do the trick

Just try to avoid the area where the oil is carried down with your breakpoint

there are nights where I wander left to retain my pocket hit while the ball hooks more and all of the sudden I have to move out completly as there is so much oil it either doesn't make it or just freaks out hooking to strong.

For me the danger then is a burnup of the ball with also weak hitting power and then I move very deep setting my breakpoin so close to the pocket.. of course missing right then is deadly...
but it works sometimes

and getting s trong rolling ball of course helps.. a ball that even outs the o/u you might encounter. Something solid with a nice smooth arc drilling

My 2 cents -
- that's not heavy carrydown. "Heavy" is when you go from solid pocket hits to washouts. That's light ot moderate.
- it could be as dizzy and grayson say: a combination of both the midlane drying up a little bit and some carrydown.

Solutions are to go around it to the outside or to the inside, with a fallback shot. Outside you need a polished ball with more length and more backend than the ball you were using. Inside you need lentgh and a short abrupt, small backending ball.

A 3rd possible is an earlier rolling ball so that it starts its hook phase before it hits the carrydown. This is sort of a specialized ball we don't always carry with us.

I agree with charlest. Since carry-down usually happens gradually, MY first option is a small move outside (or towards friction) to get the ball started a bit earlier. Good luck.

The first thing I do when my ball changes reaction, is making a move left or right(depending on oil pattern). You still hit the pocket so only small changes are necessary.

I do this for about 5-7 boards and then switch to another ball. Normally I go for added lenght and more flip in the backend. This can be a solid with higher RG and later drilling or a pearl for me, again depending on pattern. I go back to my original line to play.

I start moving again and then switch to a Pearl/Particle. This is ideal when the front dries up and the carrydown gets heavier. the pearl gets it downlane and the particle grabs in carrydown. Sometimes this is already step 2

The benefit for me is that I create a little path and therefor miss area, when I play the same pair of lanes. I'm a lefty.

Sometimes big moves can be necessary, but normally this works for me.

All the best,

Antoine

I personally grab another beer and shrug it off.  Although I generally try to go around it on the outside.
