Timing question
« on: February 02, 2009, 07:17:29 AM »
Is it advantageous to have your swing later than your slide?  Is later better?  I see a lot of pros well behind their slide with the swing.  At what point is the lateness detrimental?  Doesn't this effect ball speed as your basically eliminating any speed generated by the approach or does this make speed more consistent because of this?  Just something I have been thinking about, any info is appreciated.

Lateness is when the ball is not at the ankle when the slide completes. The later the ball arrives after the slide completes the more the urge to use muscle. The more muscle you use the more likely it is that you will pull the ball (using a traditional "squared up" shoulder alignment). However, this is exactly what crankers want, dropped shoulders (which assist with throwing the ball right) and late timing to impart as much forced speed and rev rate.

Personally, I would watch and develop a style similar to David Ozio or similar than to Tommy Jones or Sean Rash. Dont get me wrong there guys are the prototypical bowlers of today.. what we dont know is how they will fare long term and you cant argue against WRW and Duke's style (straight is greater and solid timing).

I have one of the latest timing of anyone I know, and I can keep my keep around a consistent 16-17 mph (at the pin deck), and bring it up to around 21mph (at the pin deck) when shooting splits. So I believe that if you can keep yourself balanced at the line you should be fine with later timing.

Ball level roughly with non-slide foot ankle towards end of slide is good. Time for thumb to get out of ball, fingers to to the job, and getting ball to target at the arrows. End of swing is flat so ball can be fed onto lane. Bent knee and hip kept in position below upper body make for balanced position at foul line.

Agree?
