Do big flaring balls work on a long pattern?
« on: August 03, 2009, 12:49:36 AM »
Did miserable on the Shark last week.

The only line I found early on was straight up 13 with less aggressive equipment (started with a Maniac, then switched to a Creature), but once that line started to transition I lost my look and struggled.

I thought about trying my Visionary Immortals and my Roto-Grip SD-73 Classic this week.  I'm hoping that starting with balls that flare big I'll get to the pocket throwing down and in shot inside of/or close to 10, and then once the shot starts to transition I'll have some room to adjust without jumping high.

Anybody have any experience using big flaring equipment on the Shark?

The best success I had on the Shark was using medium-flaring equipment.  I used a Cell with a 5.5 x 4 kind of layout, a matte finish Gravity Shift with a 5x5 layout, etc.  Too much flare, too much surface, too strong of a ball, etc. would cause the ball to roll too much in the heads and midlane, which made the pattern play even more over/under and reduced carry when I did hit the pocket.  You might be able to throw something with a ton of surface pretty fast up the boards in practice to burn up a little friction, but go with slightly less aggressive gear once the game starts and bump it off that spot with softer speed.  Don't be afraid to chase the shot deeper inside in search of fresh head oil.

the best I did on the shark was a 269 using a total inferno ( that I hated BTW )
playing deep inside line and getting the ball in an early forward roll and staying real soft with my speed.

moving outside was just way too inconsistent for me

I'm going out on a limb and say no. My 300 at Reno was on a 37' pattern with an Immortal Solid.

a 37ft pattern is on the shorter side of medium... international short patterns are around 34-35ft... long patterns are around 42-45...

For actual long patterns I would suggest using an agressive ball, not necessarily a very dull ball but a little surface will help if you havnt a lot of hand.  Play inside, keep your line tight.  Drill the ball with a longer pin and the MB at say 50 degrees.  That will give you the midlane you need and a strong back end in the short backend available...

my pin-down paradigm at 2000 grit polish is a monster on shark and scorpion. shark i can usually play in with it say 20 at the arrows and my break point somewhere close to 10, im try to limit my side roll too so i dont have such a violent change of direction down lane. i tried my virtual gravity (which i normally get 6-8 inches of flare) and i get too much angle on the back trying to play tight. unless the surface your bowling on is new synthetics, id say medium flaring stuff would be your best bet. i have a rico drilled diablo that only comes out on shark sometimes too, but normally when im bowling on guardian surface.
