Carry Problems
« on: November 06, 2003, 10:58:04 PM »
Hi Everyone!

I recently purchased a 13 lb. Dynothane Vendetta Black Solid drilled with Layout #2 pin above ring finger.  I've been using it for about 5 weeks.

I started using it on a medium oil shot with decent backends.  Did pretty well but felt that it was hitting a little soft.  The house recently started putting out a heavier and longer oil pattern reducing the backend.  In addition, they just installed all new pins.  The ball was barely reacting.  The pro shop guy put a little polish on it and it started reacting a little better.

I'm now playing 2nd arrow down and in.  I was told to target a little closer on the lane to get a better roll on the ball.  That seems to be helping.

Throwing a straighter shot seems to be leaving more 10 pins than usual.  I spoke with other bowlers and they're also experiencing carry problems.

Should I try polishing the ball a little more to kick out those 10 pins?  I'm getting conflicting advice.

Your comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm sorry for the long post but I tried to give you as much information as possible.

The first thing you mentioned was the new pins, usually they can take a few weeks to "break in" with their smooth and flat bottoms.

Secondly, before putting anymore polish on the ball, have you tried any small line movements...ie...half a board up, back, left, or right during the night?  Have you tried to lower your track/axis, and spin the ball more, even changing the angle of entry yet?

It's possible the extra oil is creating carry down problems in the back, which could generally reduce carry as well.  If it's carrydown that could effect your reaction later on, polishing the ball may not be a good idea because it could skid more.  It could be you might just need some surface before you decide to polish the cover.

My coach can tell when I am going through a 10 pin stage just by watching me throw the ball.
I started my session on Sunday with a good strike and he mentioned to me "was I leaving more than a few 10 pins"
My answer was yes, Id been leaving a few lately.
His answer was that I wasnt getting enough side rotation on the ball for the shot that I had.
I was coming up the back of the ball too much and I needed to get that bit more power by using a little more side rotation.
Its certainly helped.
I honestly dont think there is anything better in bowling than a good coach.
