I've come across an odd situation that apparently defies logic.
The last few weeks of a Summer league the owner decided to break-in a new oil machine. The oil pattern was the same but the amount is much heavier. WIth Guardian heads and wood backend, the oil carried down significantly in the 2nd game of the 5 games we bowled. Being scratch singles AND changing pair and opponents after every game allows you to see 10 lanes.
My breakpoint is around 8-9 board around 42 feet down. Using a Red/Black Monster had been providing a good reaction, even with the heavier oil, which has gone from Medium-light to just above medium and not quite Medium-heavy. A polished solid will work where a dull solid will not. OR you had to hit 5 board or further outside. The Outside is VERY dry. Well, I had not success with this environment until ...
Last night I tried 2 alternatives: a Nighthawk Revenge: particle pearl, sanded as it came out of the box to 1000 grit, pin under bridge, 5"x4" drilling, 2" pin-CG distance, no weight hole. Nice reaction first game, then carry down. Not as bad as Black/Red Monster, but bad enough to drop me from 225 1st game to 175. This identical scenario has happened to me the last 3 weeks in a row. EVen a polished solid resin couldn't handle the carrydown; it was pretty heavy.
I switch to Fire Quantum. Pin over ring finger, CG in grip center, 3" pin-CG distance, 5"x5" drilling (but much milder than Revenge).
Normally I'd consider the Fire Quantum a step down in oil handling capability, seeing how its a poilshed resin pearl and the Revenge is a dulled, particle pearl.
For the next 3 games, I never gave the carrydown a 2nd thought. Shot 233, 242, 227 the next 3 games, and had the same area I had before the new oil machine, but with much better results.
Anyone who played a breakpoint between say 7 board and 12 board suffered this same problem, even super crankers, because they had to use light oil balls like Hot Rods and Blue Gryphons. If they all the way out to 5 board or used some solids, they were OK.
So what shocked me is the difference between these two balls and the way they handled the carrydown.
I have new respect for the Power Koil 18 coverstock &, I guess, the Quantum mushroom core!
