CDB Does it Again
« on: April 12, 2009, 06:04:27 AM »
Carolyn came from almost being eliminated to the winner on the Women's Shootout today. Also, she set a TV record for most consecutive strikes (20).

Way to go, Carolyn!

Thanks. I knew it was something different that we don't see much.

Bellinder has one of the oddest games I've ever seen. She looks like she puts nothing on the ball, either at speed or in slow motion, but she had (I think) the second-highest rev rate on the show behind Feldman when they were putting up the CATS numbers early in the telecast. Very Don Carter-like in that the form belies the eventual effects.

And I guess Feldman is going to throw that Game Breaker until it literally breaks in half. That thing is getting up there with Walter Ray's Denny's ball and Shafer's Storm Barbed Wire that he uses to shoot spares.

Solid 7 Pin??  299 Game??!! WTF

If memory serves the last time she threw the Wild Ride on TV was when she and Sean Rash bowled together on TV in a tournament.  Neither one of them made it look good.  Again, if memory serves.

I'd like to have me one of them Maxx Zones though!!

Jess,

Do you really, reaaly believe that CDB has 230 revs and Wendy has 245??
No idea where they pulled that number from.  but that's horse manure. Wendy has a good 75-125 rpms more than Carolyn and it shows in the pin action, and the amount of hook.

You got me. I can't even count my own revs accurately, much less someone else's.

The last show Wendy made it onto, it didn't look like she had anything on the ball. I actually wouldn't have a hard time believing CDB revs it more than she does, but I do think Wendy gets more axis rotation whereas CDB is more up the back. Maybe that's why Wendy was crossing more boards.

The one that shocked me was Nation having a lower number than Bellinder. You could have won a lot of money off me if you'd bet me that before the telecast.

As for where those numbers came from, I'm guessing since it's a taped show and they're at the Kegel center, that they had enough time to pull CATS data and get a graphic up between taping day and today.

And while I'm at it, I could watch Jodi Woessner bowl for hours. Such a beautiful game she has. My wife and she are built similarly and I'm trying to get my wife to copy some of Woessner's form.

What Wild Ride? She used an OI, Rattler, and a MaXXX Zone...

Actually it was an Absolute Inferno, not an OI. It's a funky colored Mexico version. She always has it when Cheetah is out it seems.

Axis tilt throws a big monkey wrench into the rev rate equation.  Bellinder has more tilt than Macpherson who has more tilt than CDB.  If you're covering a smaller amount of the ball with each rotation, your rev rate can be higher without causing the ball to hook much more or carry as well as someone with a lower rev rate who is covering a greater circumference of the ball.  It also completely changes how the ball faces up to the pocket and how it rolls through the pins.  That's why CDB trips so many 4 pins, but has a tendancy to leave flat 10s when her angle starts to change -- she gets the ball rolling very early and uses that rollout shot to the pocket.  On the other hand, Bellinder creates a lot of skid with her higher tilt release, and she tends to really mix the pins well on lighter hits (though she can start to leave both shaker 7s and weak 10s when she doesn't get enough angle as the carrydown hits), and she won't trip as many 4s off high hits as CDB.

i watched a few weber cup matches on youtube a while back and they were showing PDW's rev rate at 275..instinctively thats a low number for him but again the amount of tilt matters.

PDW's rev rate isn't as high as it used to be, and it's usually in the 275-350 rpm range these days (according to something I heard in a Storm video once), but he combines it with high axis rotation, low axis tilt, and slower ball speed to create a strong motion downlane.

20 strikes-a record, right?  What a joke that entire program was--more of
my USBC dues being wasted.  She only bowled on one lane, thereby disqualifying
her for any records.  Why was she miked? All she uttered was "yeah".

Say what you will about CDB. She's been throwing strikes and winning for a long time.

No, she doesn't have 500 revs and yes, she's an emotional fiery competitor and sometimes she may rub someone the wrong way.

But back to bowling. On any given day I'd take HER against ANY of YOU on the lanes, and I'd even split the winnings with her.

On edit: I maybe came across too strongly on one of my paragraphs, so I decided to retract that comment.

Oh, and the other competitors had to change lanes? Come on.

I thought all the other ladies were bowling well, but CDB had the better day. Yes, she caught some breaks. Who doesn't?

Next time you trip a 4 pin let's see if you have it re-spot...
