Center heavy vs. cover heavy balls
« on: August 09, 2004, 01:55:19 AM »
What are the advantages and disadvantages of both?

Does one suit a particular bowling style better than the other?  If so, who would benefit most from which?

I would appreciate any input you could provide.

As a general guideline, cover heavy balls get farther down the lane before making there move, and center heavy start hooking earlier. this means that those with slow ball speed and higher revs are better suited for cover heavy balls, and vice versa for faster spead, lower revs. this is just general guidelines, as coverstock, static weights, core shape, pin placement, and mass bias placement have much to do with reaction also..

Stanski's has put it very well.

core heavy(low rg) - revs faster which then in turn tends to roll earlier while cover heavy balls(high rg) rev later which is how it pushes downlane before reacting.  I used to fit these types to a style but these days a player can utilize both because of constant changing lane conditions.

Example: League starts off with clean backs, you may want to throw a lower rg ball to control the backend reaction.  After a game, carrydown occurs which now allows you to throw a ball which stores better energy to eat thru the carrydown in the backend.  It wasn't this hard 20 yrs ago but changing lane conditions have caused for us to adapt faster or we'll have what I call that one transition game in your league set that ends up significantly lower than your other 2 games.

Hope some of this info helps...
