The layout shown on Jeff's website cannot be correct as drawn. The point of an equilateral triangle has to be half way between the points of the other two angles, so if both spans are 3 3/16" the thumb hole will be on the centerline. The RF span has to be longer than the MF span to match up with the layout shown. Perhaps what is shown is the spans for the standard T-grip before the thumb is offset. -- JohnP

I agree the drawing cannot be right as drawn. If he had a dropped ringfinger, then it could be right as that is similar to what I used for the last 2 1/2+ years prior to changing it approx 3 weeks ago. I use grips and had a 1/8" dropped ringfinger and 4 3/16 x 4 3/16 c-c (4 5/16 x 4 5/16+ total span) and it looked similar to the drawing that Jeff has, but not quite that extreme with the thumb that much left of the original center line.

I'm confused.  If you have a dropped ring finger, the thumb should be to the right for a righty.  That's how my span is, 4 1/4" x 4 1/8".

I drilled a CLT like this:

1. Drill middle finger (like T Grip)
2. Drill thumb hole with top of hole hitting the span line and right side of hole hitting center line. (Like picture of Jeff Carter's grip)
3. Draw new center line from top/center of thumb hole to proper position of bridge.
4. Measure/draw line for ring finger span, and drill ring finger orientated on new center line.

I drilled myself a ball or two and a few for customers with this method.  Couldn't really feel much difference.  For myself, I didn't like the extra time required in drilling the ball, and as I am not overly picky about my grip, faster is/was better.

When drilling an offset thumb, I never "fit" anyone for an "offset" thumb.  I copied many from other balls, usually went like this:

1. Drill middle finger.
2. Drill thumb with hole moved parallel left 1/16 to 3/8 of center line.
3. Drill ring finger last on original center line.

If you mark off and drill fingers first and then just move the thumb left of center line, then it is harder to measure the amount of the offset unless the lines were scribed on the ball.

Basic geometry says there is only one way to lay a triangle on to a sphere.  You can draw the lines any way you want, but the end result will be the same.

The dropped ring finger is not a thumb hole offset to the right, the ring finger span is just shorter.

That is possible because your span is shorter on the RF along with the dropped RF, but lengthen the RF to equal or longer than the MF with a dropped RF and the thumb moves to the left of the original center line.

"lengthen the RF to equal or longer than the MF with a dropped RF and the thumb moves to the left of the original center line."

Could you further explain how to do that?  I don't see how it would still be a dropped ring finger then, and the span wouldn't be correct either.  For example, my span makes it impossible for the thumb to be on or left of my centerline, correct?
