Change in rotation?
« on: July 17, 2006, 08:46:48 AM »
After messing with my grip for a while(mainly the span and thumbhole) I've shortened my span and gone from 1/8 reverse and 1/4 under in my thumb to 1/8 forward with 1/16th out. Ball is easier to hang onto and is more relaxed, however something I've noticed is that I've lost a bunch of my axis rotation. I now have a very up the back type roll, which I don't know if it's good or bad. Ball seems to want to pick up earlier now and not flip or backend as much. I have a softer speed, and a lot of the houses in the area tend to play drier, so I'm curious if this new roll might be a bad thing, or if the next few balls I buy should be set up to better suit my new roll. I could go back to 1/16th or even 1/8 under to get a little more side rotation, but I figured I would ask around first.

You are getting less side rotation (but more revs I bet), because you are staying behind the ball instead of turning your hand early.

Try pointing your index finger toward the floor on the down swing before you release the ball. Keep your index finger pointed down through the release, and key your release with the ring finger, and see if that doesn't get your hand around the ball a bit more.

I went through the same basic changes that you describe and ended with the same result. I like the more up the back release I used to have about 70-80° for a natural release and now it is more along the lines 35-45°. I do struggle on drier shots that force you to play inside now but that is ok cause I am still advancing.
It is a matter of personal preference as to what you do, but I would give the new release a chance before making any other changes and if you still want more rotation angle I would go back to 1/16 under. If you can use multiple pitches without issue you could have the balls that you want to play on lighter oil with drilled with 1/16 under and balls that you plan to use on heavier conditions with the 1/16 away. I don't recommend having more than 1/8 difference between them though.
I am considering drilling up a ball with 1/8 less left thumb pitch for drier conditions.

I actually gave that thought about different pitches consideration but I'm not really sure if I have that much confidence in my physical game yet. I am ready to start buying and messing with some equipment so hopefully I can find something that will give me a good scoring option on dry.

Hex and Rev I would not recomend having two different pitches and plan on going back and forth between them in competition. I have tried this and either hung up in the one with more pitch or fell out of the one with less pitch depending on which one I used first. Your hand gets used to one thing and as soon as you change it up it makes any difference very noticable.

Over the past three years I have been attending Ron Clifton's clinics and studying the tips he has posted on his website:
 http://www.bowl4fun.com/

I have gone from 1/4 reverce pitch in a "relaxed span" grip to 1/2" forward pitch using the same span measurements and can go either up the back of the ball (close to 0 degrees of rotation, used mostly for spares), or come around the ball about 70 degrees or so, mostly because my wrist isn't as flexable as it used to be.

There is not a magic drilling that will release the ball for you, there are wrist control devices (pro release, robby revs and the like), but nothing is better than learning to do it yourself. It takes lots of hard work and pleanty of practice, but it is so worth it when you see the shot and you know you just need to move in a little and adjust your release to get a little more side rotation or a little less depending, and you nail it.

Hex,

FWIW I have to agree with CoachJim in general. Do not use 2 different set of pitches; it is major trouble.  Your new set of pitches make plenty of sense, IF your hand's physical traits justify that. If you're having no rubbing or blisters or wrists or forearm troubles, then this is probably the right thign for you.

Over the past 4 years I have gradually gone from 3/8" reverse and 1/4" left lateral in my thumb (I'm right handed), to 0"/0". My release and my PAP has not changed. Infact, it's easier to change releases now. If the grip is comfortable, maybe it's just something you have to work on. Maybe a decent wrist device (like Mongoose or Pro Release, etc) can help you a bit to get the right feel. (Try not to depend on them unless you have a wrist problem.)

FYI with your original 1/4" under, it should have been a lot harder to get axis rotation than it should be now. That promotes a more end-over-end release, in general. It should actually be easier now, solely because it should be easier to get a clean thumb release.

Easier to get end-over-end roll? I was told that with that much under(right), it was too much for my hand and was causing me to come over the side and on top of the ball to exit cleanly, which I do believe was correct, because that is exactly what I was doing. Since going to this left lateral, ball roll is more end over end. Man my hand must be wierd or something.... I'm still having a little bit trouble with feel, theres a sharp spot on the back lip of the hole which has given me a little blister, so I'm going to get that cleared up today.
