Speed Problems
« on: July 22, 2008, 01:04:11 PM »
I am having major problems with my speed in that it is very slow (13 mph). I have tried everything I can think of, (ex higher back swing and holding the ball higher  in my stance. Currently throwing 15lbs and thinking of dropping to 14. I am a lefty and when I shoot my 7 pin ball speed is roughly 15mph. Needless to say I have tried same for my strike ball as 7 pin but then the ball does not hook. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

one thing that really puts speed on my ball is not grabbing it at the bottom. for example, my normal strike shot is about 16 MPH. but, when i take out all my hit for my spares, my speed jumps up to 20 MPH-without me even trying to throw the ball harder. it just happens naturally.

now, that 20 MPH is also accompanied by nearly zero rotation. so if i want to play straight, i kill just partial hand, and my speed is around 18 MPH. but, i still maintain decent rotation.

these speed increases happen completely on their own-i feel zero difference whatsoever, except for less hit at the bottom. just remember, grab less at the release, and try to exit the ball as cleanly and quickly as possible.

i hope this helps, and good luck!

One way to add speed is to have a free, relaxed armswing.  Let the ball do the work.  I have a friend who nearly obsesses about his ball speed 11 - 12mph, he muscles the ball too often.  When he is more relaxed, the speed is up as high as 14 mh.

I have also moticed the lane condition and type of ball has a roll in ball speed.  With the different patterns we've been playing, the ball speed varies.  We are on the TOC modified some what and my speed is in the 15 - 16 mph range.  When we were on the Viper pattern, it was 14 - 15 mph.  The ball speed is per Quibica.

when i was throwing 15 lbs, my speed was 13-14 mph.  then when i switched to 14 lbs it shot up to 16-17 mph so i gained a little bit of speed and maintained the nice hook i had.

Keep in mind that the more you loop your backswing behind your back and then back out towards the right (for right-handers) to hook the ball, the more speed you will lose down lane.

This is a common problem for most bowlers I see in leagues.

I dropped to 14 hoping to pick up a mile per hour, but did not. I averaged about 14.7 to 15.2 on my ball speed for a while.

Once I started to focus on keeping my swing plane straight and coming up the back of the ball properly, I started throwing 16.5+ effortlessly. This is right where I needed to be to compliment my rev's and it no longer forces me to play lines I'm uncomfortable with.

Along these lines.  I've always been on the soft side in relation to my revs!

My ball is very jumpy at the back as a result.
All of my good bowling comes when machines have me over 15 mph at the pin deck.
When I bowl bad I'm high 13s to mid 14s!  (Except on very oilly that stuff is perfect!)

REgcently I tried something different and it worked.  Instead of just holding the ball higher for more speed.....I also supported my bowling hand with my other hand under the wrist!  This seemed to allow my bowling hand to be freeer in its swing.

Secondly I held the ball in close to my rib cage(this reminded me of what I remember my friend Hall of Famer Dave Davis did in his setup...he was often near 17 mph at the pins)....usually I hold the ball out in front of me.
This higher and closer setup(with the other hand supporting) seemed to make everthing more free and in sync and one day people seemed to think I was throwing near 16 mph at the pin deck.

It made a world of difference!  That was about 3 weeks ago....last time with a ball in my hand....can I remember that for this weekend!

I recently picked up a new sole and heel for my slide foot that is a good bit slicker for tacky approaches.  When I used it on a normal approach my ball speed picked up significantly, although I did lose some of my revs.  You may want to try a shoe that slides a little easier.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. In talking with my wife about it last night, she thinks I may be grabbing at the bottom also. Thanks for all of the help.

leftyinelinsville....

I think along these same lines too...and in addition I use the sole or heel(when I'm bowling better and more often) to slightly adjust the amount of hook.

The more stop....the more hook.  The more slide the straighter I tend to get for a trajectory.

PS others are better at changing wrist postions to get the same effect and use the same shoes.
