Changing ball or changing line?
« on: October 11, 2008, 06:38:55 AM »
I am a stroker and in the past, I have aimed  exclusively at the 8th board at the arrows. I used to start with an aggressive ball and then switch to less aggressive balls as my trajectory dried up. In this way, I would use about three reactive balls during a 4-game match in addition to my spare ball and the results were so-so. Recently, a 220 average bowler suggested that, rather than change balls I should try changing the trajectory using the same ball, that is moving towards the middle as the lanes dry up.  I tried changing my line progressively so that at the end of the 4th game, I am shooting at the 15th board (3rd arrow). In the last two matches, I've had very good results, shooting 15 points above my average. I wonder if this is just a chance happening or if it will last. I would like to know what most of you do.

Moving! Changing your line is absolutely the best option. Sometimes it won't work, and you'll have to make a ball change, but when you can simply move and stay with the same ball, 9 times out of 10, it's your best bet.

I make ball changes, usually 1 every 3 games or so, but nothing is better than being able to move your feet and make minor adjustments rather than just grabbing another ball.

High rev rate (400-450 rpm)
Semi-high speed (16-17 mph)
Book average: 193 (current 245)

For a game based on the principles of science and math, bowling sure does have a bad habit of being illogical.

It all depends for me. I have done both and both have worked. Most of the time I do change lines. If I really like the line I have I will try a weaker ball to see if it works. However if I really like the way the ball is reacting then I will change lines. So for me it's all on a feel thing.

I change lines, then balls, if neither work then I work with different ball speeds or hand positions.

Most normally I will change lines chasing the oil, but on some occasions that may not be a good option depending on the rest of the bowlers and the lines they have been shooting.  Most recently last Saturday I was trying to chase the line in and there was alot of carrydown, I finally moved clear to the outside with a different ball and played clear up and in behind the carrydown to score.  Every night will be different and I am learning that I sometimes need to make a drastic move instead of just inching over.

JD74, you're a much better bowler than I am as I average 195. I would like to know what you do to be consistent with changes in speed and hand positions. I find that I have a natural speed and that I cannot be consistent with speed changes. I get a lot of over under because speeds other than my "natural" speed vary a lot. With different hand positions, my precision suffers.

Thanks for your comments,

Martin
