Changing Ball Surface During Competition
« on: January 12, 2004, 08:27:48 PM »
Ok, something that I read in the Coverstock Preparation forum reminded me of a discussion that I had several years ago with a high rev bowler. He was telling me that he thought that the ABC rules for altering the ball's surface during competition favored bowlers like him with a higher rev rate while restricting the lower rev rate bowlers.

The ban against using any type of abrasive to alter the surface hurts the lower rev rate bowlers because if they run into a lane condition where they do not get enough hook, they cant do anything to the surface to help themselves. However, as a higher rev player, if he ran into conditions where he was getting too much reaction, he could put his ball into the LustreKing and tone the reaction down.

Generally speaking, he said that the lower rev rate players usually needed to get more friction on the balls surface (like for carrydown) while the higher rev players could more easily generate more revs if needed, and on a drier condition, the higher rev players needed to use more polished equipment so they could just use the LustreKing. He thought that in order for the rules to be fair for everyone, that the use of the LustreKing should also be banned during competition but doubted that that type of income source for the centers would be eliminated.

It could be argued that the use of the LustreKing during competition is fair for all bowlers, but is it?

In general, during competition, it's illegal to increase surface (i.e. dull) your equipment, but it's legal to decrease surface (i.e. polish).

For example, Neo-Tac's Renew-It, a mild polish, is acceptable for use during competition, but (according to the back label on the bottle) Liquid Sandpaper may only be used before or after.

So yes, I basically agree with your high-rev friend.

In this day of people bringing 8-12 balls to a tournament, this rule needs to go away.  If Joe rich guy is allowed to use a dozen V2's, each prepared with a slightly different surface, then Tom poor guy should be allowed to adjust the surface of the only ball he owns.

After all, unlike golf, bowling is supposed to be a poor man's game, right?

So couldn't a lower rev player just resurface their ball before the competition, and if it's to much throw it in the luster king?

For those that want the rule abolished, you have to remember the main reason behind the rule.  It's to protect the lanes.  Just like lane conditioner was originally intended.  What do you think would happen to the lane if you took your ball, sanded it, then didn't wipe all the residue off? or continuously sand it ever few frames without wiping the residue off?  That residue would transfer to the lane, wear it out and eventually cause the proprietor to spend thousands on replacing it.  If everyone could be trusted to actually clean the ball AFTER sanding, this rule wouldn't be needed, but we always have to punish the many for the sins of the few.

Would the residue left from sanding be any worse than some of the particle balls (glass beads)?
