Different league format needed
« on: February 23, 2007, 02:41:18 AM »
Hi. I'm thinking of trying to get a fun summer league going but would like to use a format where people don't have to get subs if they can't show up. Something like a 20 weeker with 5 drops. Make it an individual not team league. I wonder if bowling against your own average would work? If a person bowled all 20 weeks he could drop his lowest 5 points days. If there were to be a prize fund, once a person had 15 weeks in they would only pay the actual bowling cost. Any suggestions anybody?

Not sure how you would drop bad weeks, since you are bowling against someone. I have done a singles league before and it was a lot of fun. We did 4 games, changed lanes and bowled against 4 different bowlers per night. We also used more difficult lane conditions. Everything was match play and handicap, but with the tougher conditions it took a lot of the luck out. With the PBA Experience patterns now available, if the center was willing to put them out, that would be some nice patterns to bowl with different patterns each week or rotated throughout the summer.

The key would be not bowling against anybody but only bowling against your own average. I might start taking my teams league scores and see how we would do if we each bowled against our own average. No handicaps to figure out and everybody has an equal chance. Say you had a 190 avg, 189 - lose a point, 190 - 1/2 point, 191 - 1 point. It would seem like the individual point totals at the end of the league would be pretty close. Now since your really bowling against yourself it wouldn't be a problem having drops. Of course I'd have to find an accommadating bowling center, since they wouldn't have a concrete number of bowlers every week. As for assigning alleys each week I'd make it random by drawing numbers. That way everybody would get to bowl with everybody else. Remember this would be pretty much a fun summer league, maybe a little prize money or maybe not.
