Sun baking
« on: June 25, 2005, 04:50:59 AM »

I read somewhere in here about a process of placing balls in the sun and baking out some of the oil, however, I can't find the post.

If anyone has done this, please let me know exactly what you did.  I seem to remember that the balls were placed in a black garbage bag but I don't recall how long they are left in the heat. Also, if done only for a short period, does it have any adverse effect on the balls.

Thanks.

Heating a ball up is not good for it.  You can achieve the same results in getting oil out of your ball by using Ebonite's Hook Again Chamber or Columbia's CPR.  When you heat a ball up you can remove oil yes, but you can also bake out the resins in the ball that are in the cover.

BAPS, please stop giving only 1/2 of the story.

Brunswick actually reccomends heating balls for cleaning purposese..

But then again.. your post was a TOTAL hijack of his original question.

Thedjs, It normally takes me about an hour to 2 hours for me to get satisfactory results with the black plastic bag.

Check in the coverstock prep forum for more suggestions.

Another way to baking out the oil is to put the ball in a sauna.
The temperature can´t be higher than 30-40 Celsius (don´t know how many Farenheight that is). I haven´t done this myself but I'm gonna do it after the summer.
I´m unsure how long the ball should be in the heat, i´m gonna ask some ppl.
I will post when i know how long the ball should be heated.
