CATS ANALYSIS
« on: August 09, 2004, 07:20:02 PM »
Have u had it done and what are your numbers?  Do you match with what CATS states you should average?  If not, are you better or less than the estimate.

My numbers
Initial Velocity: 18.6 MPH  (220+ range)
Velocity Range (consistency of speed): .6 MPH (220+ range)
Target Range (Accuracy): 2.0 boards (220+ range)
Launch Angle Range (Consistency): .241 (220+ range)
Entry Angle: 5.0 (210-219 range)
Initial Rotation: 285-315 (210-219 range)

So, according to CATS I need more angle of entry and rotation to get to the top level.  Definitely gave me some things to work on this summer.

I was going to get it done this year at nationals but didn't get around to it.

Are there any places that do it during the year and not just at nationals?

Eric, Livespive.... check with Stonehedge Lanes in Akron Ohio area.  Fred Bordens house.  I think they can or will be doing CATS.

I did it at nationals this year. I don’t have the numbers with me but other than ball speed all my numbers were well in the 220+ range. My ball speed was a little slow at 17.4 and my rev rate was 300.

Then I promptly went out and bowled like old doggie doo.

Maughany -  They let you warm up and then you throw 10 shots that they measure. Many of the measurements are about how consistent you are from shot to shot, ball speed, launch angle, accuracy at the target, etc.

They then show you a video tape of the session and discuss the numbers with you.

Or, less speed and more swing...

Its all relative isn't it.

Curious, what do they charge you to get this valuable information?

I hadn’t done it before and simply wanted to see the numbers. At this stage of my bowling career I’m not probably going to make any major changes but one could use the numbers to gauge where they needed to improve.

There were several packages you could purchase. I don’t remember for sure the price. The base package was around $60 where they took your numbers and went over them with you. Other packages included coaching sessions and video tape of the sessions. These went up to $140. They had one final package that gave you the full meal deal and included a new storm ball that was $300.

Had it done at nats also. Speed 18.8-19.2 Revs 330-350, entry angle 4-4.5, all where they should be around. Launch angle and target range were much lower that is why I worked with Mike. Muscling a swing has a definite disadvantange as after working with him my launch angle and target range were much tighter. The raw numbers didn't mean much to me but after adjustments looking at how they were effected did. Funny he also pointed out a grip problem which was causing some of the muscle in the swing. Well worth the investement. He was only suppose to do 1-1.5 hrs of lesson. He did 3 hrs with no qualms. Having the video also is a nice reference point.I heard a lot of flack from teammates as i did it the day before Nats, (learning new things and fixes for problems) but no one complained as i was high all-events for the local group.

My numbers were:

Initial Velocity: 18.1 MPH (200-219 range - 200-209 and 210-219 were the same)
Velocity Range (consistency of speed): .7 MPH (210-219 range)
Target Range (Accuracy): 3.8 boards (200-209 range)
Launch Angle Range (Consistency): .742 (220+ range)
Entry Angle: 2.861 (170-179 range)
Initial Rotation: 270 (200-209 range)

Those numbers are consistent with what I average, with the launch angle and entry angle averaging each other out.  Like the previous time I had a CATS analysis, one shot out of the ten threw my numbers a bit.  I was encouraged by the fact that I improved in nearly every category over 2001, when I had it done previously.

My theory on the pathetic entry angle is that I was throwing the wrong ball for where I had to play the lane.  Since I had my CATS analysis after I finished bowling singles, I had already dropped off all but one ball at the shipping booth, so I had no choice.  The one I had (Animal Untamed, cover in box condition, pin beneath fingers - more of an early roll drilling) was set up more for playing up the boards, so it was not recovering a lot from where I was playing lane 81, which was around 13 at the arrows out to around 8 at the breakpoint.

OK, end of rationalization - back to the lanes to try to get those numbers better.

KOTM,
Your launch angle number, which falls between Nod's and mine, puts you into the 220+ category.  FYI, 1.03 is listed as the average number for 220+.

I had to go and dig these numbers out from a file.  This is from 2001:

Ave RPM: 200
Initial Velocity: 16.9
Velocity Range:  0.7
Target Range:  2.7
Entry Angle:  4.0
Launch Angle Range:  0.81

I dont know what those numbers relate to bowling average-wise.  My note on the sheet says I was using a Midnight Scorcher so I dont know if that had any effect on entry angle, LOL, since that ball does not have a big backend hook.

MI Accroding to the C.A.T.S. stats I have you should be averaging around 200-205.

Is that close?

Nod,

Thanks for the info.  That is correct.  I averaged 194-198 last season and my high ave a couple of years ago was 205.  Sounds like the CATS stats are pretty accurate, at least in my case.
